Cub names
Some great/funny/mad/unpronouncable club names: Our whole history is in some of these names. Just a few that I have heard of -
Tipp -Skeheenarinky, Lorrha-Dorrha (my favourite club name)
Wexford - Oulart The Ballagh (what does this mean?) Raparees-Starlights, Tara Rocks (love that)
Kilkenny - Black & White (simple)
Cork - Clann na Gael (very welcoming)
Antrim - Tir-na-nóg (fantasy)
Kildare - Round Towers (strong & longlasting)
Donegal - Aodh Ruadh ( High King)
There must be loads more, please share.

Did you make those up? Ballybacon is a real club (Brendan Cummins) but the other two, no way.

I've played the Longford Slashers once, quite handy but we beat them... they really should change their name though! Strangely enough the bus got a puncture when we were leaving Nice people up there though so it probably wasn't them but still.

Drom and Inch.
Tipp. Sounds like urban music.
Moycarkey-Borris GAA in Tipp also encompasses the areas of Two-Mile-Borris and Horse and Jockey

Re: Cub names
Mikado, my apologies, I had to look those two club names up. They are indeed real clubs. Do you by any chance, know the history behind the names?

Re: Cub names
Hey Blue, no I’ve no idea about the history at all. I’ve passed the fighting cocks clubhouse before so I know it’s the official name of the club, I presume it started out as a man sausage fighting “arena?” and kept the name ever since. isn’t it one of the nicknames for the county team too?
Not sure on the slashers either, but passing through Kinnegad last week I saw a flag up with “Kinnegad Slashers” written on it, now I know that’s not the clubs proper name (it’s Coralstown/Kinnegad) so I’m thinking that “slashers” is just a nickname in those parts. It could have more to do with cutting crops than chopping legs or pishing in public, but I just don’t know.

Re: Cub names
Mick, maybe it's the time of morning, but I was going to ask you what man sausage fighting "arena" was but copped before posting.
Until TG4 starting showing them, I never really took much notice of club games and have only recently copped their names and just realised how our whole history and geography are reflected in them. Some of the names are brillant and some are just plain mad. Is it any wonder the gaa pi***s off some on our island?

Re: Cub names
I love how teams from across the world have Irish names with the foreign place name. like Wofle Tones in Boston or Barcelona Geals.

Re: Cub names
Here's some more -
Sons of St. Patrick, Currin - Monaghan - Was St. Patrick married? Is that written in the annals? Come to think of it, he could have been married and his family written out of history, or maybe he was just a bold boy and left offspring dotted all over Ireland. He did get around.
Scotstown - a load of Scots build a town in Monaghan.
Four Roads - Rosscommon - only 4 roads out of the village.
O'Callaghan's Mills - Clare - a guy called O'Callaghan owned a mill and ran a team.

Re: Cub names
In Fermanagh almost all the clubs are simply named after the town/village with a saints name added to it.
Irvinestown St Molaise
St Patrick's Donagh
St Joseph's Ederney
Simple, but boring.

Didn't Rob Kearney play for Cooley Kickhams?
There's a Ballymun Kickhams too, very odd suffix isn't it?

Re: Cub names
Nothing Japanese sounding about that RB, more south East Asia really.
Most clubs from Meath seem to be just place names with a couple of saints stuck in there to boot. Best names from the royal county-
Seneschalstown (cool complicated sounding) and Nobber. I think some of the right mad ones are the best. Éire Óg , Na Fianna and Clan na Gael some of my favourites. As a newcomer a few years ago it did sound a bit weird having teams named after people and religious fugures.
Some names from here in Scotland-
Tír Conaill Harps
Glaschu Gaels
Dundee Dalriada
Dúnedin Connolly (the only non-irish club I know where the person its named after actually has a connection with the place)
Obviously here was part of the plan to confuse the local population.
