Golf all night long.....
The issue of moving to central European time seems to have surfaced again and this time looks like a real possibility for you folks in England. Sadly the Scottish Government are adopting its usual parochial poor little Scotland stance on the matter.

A change would mean an extra hour of light on summer evenings and that of course means extra time to play golf. Imagine it did happen in Scotland, you could play golf in Dornoch or brora till after midnight. I would love so much for this to happen everywhere in the UK as I could play golf almost whenever I wanted. Let’s hope the three people of the highlands and their sheep do not spoil it for all us golfers.
I assume you guys are just as excited by this prospect as I am?

This story comes up twice a year, every year but nothing will ever happen.
Obviously you'd pay for it in winter at the other end by mornings not getting light until 10am

Super
What do you do on a winter’s morn that requires sunlight anyway?
I also acknowledged the story came up often but the idea seems to be gathering more momentum than it has for a long time.

Every year they say it's gathering more momentum. It's as predictable as when stories of the Loch Ness monster suddenly pop up just before the tourist season.

Up Holly Wilaboobie north it is already too dark most of the winter to play golf before work.

Mac, it will be down south too. Down south isn't that far away and the difference in getting light isn't all that much.
On the shortest day of the year (21.12) Sunrise in London is 08:03, in Aberdeen it is 08:46, not exactly massive.

Who cares; you lucky bar stewards are getting to play golf almost year round. Kwini and I don't have that luxury.
I am definitely living up to my user name as the mofos in charge of the course sent an email on Wednesday saying the course was closed effective the same day. Why they couldn't have waited until after the weekend I don't know

I guess we are lucky here that we can play near enough all year round. I cannot begin to tell you how frustraing it was last winter with the courses shut for around a month, not sure I could handle an East Coast winter in the US!!
No wonder you are grumpy!!

I'd be happy to have no winter golf if for example there was a quality alternative, such as decent weather and mountains for skiing or something along those lines.
The last couple of years in the UK have been miserable though, because aside from golf, theres not much else to do where I am.

Have they closed all the pubs? That would be enough to make a man suicidal!

Re: Golf all night long.....
This comes up every year.
When it was tried in the early 1970s it was soon abandoned because people hated it being dark all the way to work in the winter. The extra daylight in the evening doesn't make much difference - it would still be dark at 5.30pm, instead of 4.30pm.
I don't see what has changed.

Where in PA are you? Even our course, which closes the first week of November come hell or high water, is still open until Sunday week.
Closing now seems extreme to say the least.

Re: Golf all night long.....
Kwini,
I'm in the Poconos. The early closing is due to the ongoing saga that is Middle Smithfield Township and the supervision or lack therof in the Township. The local paper has a section on the website dedicated to the comings and goings of the Board of Supervisors. You couldn't make some of the stuff that they get up to up!
Normally the course closes in December but we've been screwed. Tee box markers and flags have been removed, carts locked up. The course is almost impossible to play without a cart unless you a like a mountain goat have at least 7 hours to spare and plenty of rations. I'm thinking of walking holes 7-16 carrying a small bag as they are relatively close to where I live and can get back home without too much trouble.

Some nice courses over the border in the Binghamton area, if they haven't all been washed down the Susquehanna (like Enjoie).

Re: Golf all night long.....
Kwini, a buddy has called me already about playing somewhere. Hopefully we'll get somewhere local. Trouble is there is talk of white Poopie coming down from the sky in this weekend's forecast. Although it may not happen, you know what weather forecasts are like. How you can be wrong more than 50% of the time and still keep your job is beyond me.
I must admit I don't travel that far for golf; club house is a mile away. 4 weeks ago I ventured West to play a couple of courses and had some fun as our course is very tight.
Just out of interest what would you recommend?

Re: Golf all night long.....
Sorry Grumpy, Missed your post.
We used to go to Enjoie and the State course down there, can't remember what it's called offhand. Endwell Greens is supposed to be not too bad, then there's Mark Twain in Elmira (too far?) plus a good track in Horseheads; and some good courses along the NY Rt20 corridor - Seven Oaks, Cooperstown, etc.
Go the other way to the Catskills and you get to the Concord etc.
