Del Potro's 2011
A fabulous career hampered by injury. Delpo has been trying hard since that wrist injury to come back to the position he left before going to rehab.
In the 4 slams this year
Aussie open- lost to Baghdatis in the second round
French Open- lost to Novak in the third round (came back after hip injury)
Wimbledon- lost to Nadal in the fourth round, he was impressive there
US open- lost to Simon in the third round again.
A win-loss record of 47-15 this year. One of the 3 players to beat Djoker this year. Seeing his ytd record it does not look that bad but this also shows that Delpo is not near at his best and near top 4 as well. He has lost to F Mayer twice this year, to Simon twice
I would have been happier had he beaten Tsonga in Vienna neverthless a good result for him.
Delpo did show the glimpse of his talent against Nadal during Wimby fourth round and that was a tough match for Nadal.
With few ranking points in grasp at Valencia and then Paris there might be a slim possibility for him to make it to the ATP finals which will make a befittig end to his comeback year.

DiiNh... It is all right if you dislike Nadal as a player, for reasons known to you.Djoker is in Nadal's head wrote:
(no. 2 is still waiting for that to happen)...
Delpo is one player who Nadal will never forget as he got the thumping of his life during 2009....
Why not just mention positives about Del Potro? Getting to the final in Vienna, for example, as a sign of his recovery, perhaps.

Re: Del Potro's 2011
Delpo was a top 5 player and I hope he gets back to that again. Outside the current top 4 ranked players I see him as the one who can really challenge them next year. Obviously being lower down the rankings meant he came up against the higher seeds earlier in tournaments this year than would have the case. So that has made it harder for him to get to the sharp end of these tournaments. However in the USO I was a bit disappointed in the fact he lost to Simon in R3 as he seemed to have a good path through to meet Murray in the QF's. Would have liked to see that game as they have had good match ups in the past.

DJ well in that case de-WUM yourself with threads that don't necessarily bash Nadal or anyone else or make Djoko look better then he is.

Thanks for the 'balanced' analysis.Djoker is in Nadal's head wrote:Fine LF, no more wumming, the article has been edited to initiate a debate
Technically, a win, but I would say, both Murray and Del Potro, played an 'injured' Djokovic, who either should have withdrawn or should not have started the match, respectively.Djoker is in Nadal's head wrote:One of the 3 players to beat Djoker this year.
Watched parts of the Tsonga-Del Potro match. The last set and a half. Tsonga was firing aces and Del Potro was a bit sluggish and his movement was not as fluid as I have seen him in the past, for example the match against Nadal @W.
The doubles with Stepanek may not have been conducive to a good rest. He played two matches yesterday, his singles SF and the doubles SF.

He is in the same quarter as Tsonga in Valencia, a tough win, if at all possible, especially based on today's match. Monfils is the likely QF opponent, and then Ferrer, which will give him 500 points. It will bring him close to Fish.
Pushing hard in Paris can cause more fatigue, which is counterproductive to a successful WTF, despite getting Del Potro to a qualification there.

Re: Del Potro's 2011
Contradictory I know, but in some ways Del Po will be pleased with his year and also disappointed.
Pleased - stayed fairly fit, climbed a great deal up the rankings.
Disappointed - that he did not do better at the Slams.
Personally, I though he would get back into the top 10 at least this year - (it could still happen). A good showing at the GS would have seen him climb even into the top 5.
But considering he'd been out for so long he can't be too down on himself. Contrast Agassi. His "comeback" year of 1998 saw him do really well, but not in the slams. Whe he did well in the GS in 1999 he got back to number one.
Expect Del P to be challenging the for a top five place next season.

Re: Del Potro's 2011
Would love to see him get back at least into the top five because after Federer at No.4 I dont really see any strong challengers to those at the top.
Can he regain his past form, this could be a problem because of his size and the style of tennis he plays may restrict this from happening due to being vulnerable to injury.
Let's hope that he can overcome this.

Re: Del Potro's 2011
Good point about injury with del P. Think of the other immensely large players on tour - Krai-check (can never spell his name), Karlovic, Philly Pousis (another spelling horror). May be some I can't recall. They've all suffered injuries.
Agree about the challenge needed to the big four. Only thing that changes year by year about the top four players is the positions, not the names.
Crazy thing about sport is that however young and good you are, there's normally someone even younger coming along to knock your block off. Not sure that's happenning at the moment.

Being one of biggest Bel Boy fan, I dont see this article as a wum, but yes to recover from injury is no easy task, and DelPo trying his best physically as well as mentally.
A few wins against top 4 players would certainly make him believe who he is and what his game is, till then its gonna be a struggle, but he will be back and lets wish him a good 2012.

Unfortunately you didn't see it before the OP was shamed in to changing the subject matter.
Another great win for the mighty JMDP today. Other results are certainly going his way. Hopefully he'll squeeze in to the World Tour Finals, although after playing 4 weeks in a row, not sure what sort of shape he'll be in if he does get there.

Del Potro 2011 is slowing turning from good to great. Should he reach at least one of the of the two big goals still remaining for 2011: the Davis cup or the qualification for the WTF, his season would become a memorable one. An absolute protagonist for the years to come.

Yes, as much as I admire the old styled serve & volley of the American can't see him doing particularly well in the WTF. Would be great to see instead what Del Potro could do if he gets a last minute ticket for London.

DOH!! 4-1 up in the 2nd set breaker, then loses 6 points in a row.
At least he'll have an extra day off for Paris.

Only if if he gets to the final in Paris I think. Or I suppose if one of the top eight pullls out. Almagro still ahead of him though.

Re: Del Potro's 2011
Thanks Calder - I didn't have the energy to look up, and work out!
Regarding one of the 8 pulling out - I hope that Djokovic will do so if shoulder still an issue, I know it would be rather hollow not to see him there after he has been the player of the year, but it would be better to see him fully recovered for the start of 2012 imo.

A bad day for the seeds. Ferrer too got owned by Monaco.
A good week for giant killers.
Will nishikori be able to beat tmf?

I actually like Almagro. Sure he is no champion material but at least he has a great game...Whereas Berdych? no great game, no champion material...and a moody face.

Gutted for Delpo. Such a talent and not been fulfilled because of these injuries. I knew that something was wrong as it was quite surprising to see him losing against Simon and then to Garnollers.
I just wish that he recovers fast.

Apparently it's a shoulder injury that got progressively worse through the week. He's hoping to be fit for the Davis Cup final.

Djokovic, Nadal, Berdych, Del Potro - shoulder injuries.
Del Potro has DC in Dec against Spain. Hope he makes that. Nalbandian's last DC chance, perhaps.
