Rooney in midfield?
So tonight Wayne Rooney played in midfield for what I believe was the first time in his career. He played better imo then alot of United's normal central midfields but, is I think, better suited to being a striker at the moment but could possibly be molded into a center mid. What do people on here think of it? Should he be put in midfield or stay as a striker? Or indeed could he play somewhere inbetween?

As the RTE pundits are saying, he is wasted there and it doesn't utilise his best talents.

I don't like it to be honest. I think playing him there may confuse him and he might start playing like a midfielder more often than being an out and out striker when put there. Fergie shouldnt try and make him another Alan Smith.

I do think in his later years he will end up playing in the hole behind the front two in a Scholes type role but not now no.
The game tonight was, on paper at least, a gimme and it was probably a good opportunity to give him a game there allowing Berbatov and Owen to have a decent run out.

I think he will always be a player who likes to come deep, and when he's older and loses pace I wouldn't be surprised if he became a midfielder, I think he's best with another striker who plays ahead of him as I wouldn't think of him as an out and out striker, more of second striker who plays deeper and has more freedom to move about the pitch.

Yeah, I was thinking the same really as you, I think his best position is probably just behind the other striker as invincibleILeak (CL-6WF) said. It was a strange decision by SAF though.

I thought the first time I saw him at Everton he reminded me of Gazza, through time I could see Scholes in him, the fact is Rooney could excel in midfield but he is a top top striker, he scores and creates far to many goals to drop him into midfield, he'll end up there when he's 30 but for now he should be up front

Bizarre decision, you'd think Rafa Benitez was wearing a Fergie costume.
