Should there be the possibility for more cards to be entered for high handicappers and less for low handicapper?
Winter Eclectic rules discussion
First topic message reminder :
Who was it that ran this last year? Is it being done again this year?
I didn't play last year due to injury but I'd be up for it this year

Ok, how about if you let me play off 28 I'll hack my way around playing left handed?

Yeah, why are the low guys being limited to fewer cards? We've got it difficult enough as it is

Nice try Marcus. Next you'll tell me you're from the Far east and will want to play from the reds!
Go right right-handed and you can play off half of that. Must be witnessed by the four other folders in you foursome for the score to count.

D4S it was a suggestion that was made by Ban_Bam. I thought it had some merit so put it up for consideration. Maybe it would work better if handicaps didn't come into play. Anyway it's up for discussion and will be up to the participants.

Mav - thanks for the offer, I'll reach out to O/S see what his "fix it" formula was.
I'm thinking together we set rules and format. I'll need scorecards from participants so I can prepare the spreadsheet and we can kick it off sometime later this month.

So NST and Mercurio have joined the party. Glad to have you aboard.
Mav I think you're pushing your luck there. But if you want to play off plus 6 it's your decision. Course record holder too pfft

4)1GrumpyGolfer – 12.64 under par

Mav about your medical exemption. I think we can make an exception an allow a nurse to accompany you.

Re: Winter Eclectic rules discussion
The only thing putting me off participating in this is that our winter greens are rubbish. I never hole out, anything inside 18 inches is lifted. We get a lot of rain in the winter (usually a long winter at that) and the greens just end up a soggy, bumpy nightmare.I can't see myself having handed in 8 cards by the end of March.

Re: Winter Eclectic rules discussion
What is it you want 1GG? Probably best for individuals to email you with handicap, par and SI for each hole on the course they are going to use. Then I found it better if the complete card was submitted for each round, but just holes where the score better does work and a change of course is unfortunate, but completely unworkable.
It's tricky enough that everyone plays on different courses

Re: Winter Eclectic rules discussion
not sure i'm in favour of handicap amendments during the comp unless there's a particular system behind it. i doubt 'winging it' will provide much consistency!
drive, having run an eclectic for my group this year it seems clear to me that the lower the handicap, the quicker you will be to improve on your scoring - hence my suggestion for reducing the number of cards submittable based on hcap. just had a wee look back at the website i based our handicap allowance on and it suggests the following:
"If played over two rounds, each competitor deducts 5/6ths of the full handicap from the Eclectic score for the two rounds. If played over three rounds deduct 4/5ths of the handicap from the Eclectic score. If played over four rounds deduct ¾, five rounds 2/3 and six or more rounds, a half."
I'd be in favour of the 2/3 for 5, or 1/2 for 6 rounds personally. Also, gross scores on each hole with a handicap subtraction from the total score, rather than nett scores on each hole makes it far more straightforward.

Hi 1GG (and all)
would like to enter as well if possible. Not really said a main hello to all but have posted a couple of times and had the pleasure of meeting a few of the gang a couple of years back at Bournemouth.
Play on South coast at Lee on the Solent (home to Ryder cupper Steve Richardson for those with a long memory - Kiawah'91), currently off 6 and would be good to have something to keep the interest alive over the winter.
1GG - not sure what the setup is you're running but I've a Excel spreadsheet that we used for a local eclectic that runs to 9 cards that I'd be happy to send if you'd like a look?

Re: Winter Eclectic rules discussion
Ban_Bam.
Winging it was taken straight from last year's rules. Based on essential research (OldShanker) it will be difficult to judge what the best thing to do would be. Low handicappers have less to play with, you're all playing on different courses and at different times. Last year I tried to get all my games in before the course was shut down, didn't happen, and that was before some people had even started.
It will be total of best gross scores less handicap and then adjusted to allow for different total par.
If it was to be played off scratch I think the lower handicappers should have less chances to improve and the higher handicappers more chances.

If it was played off scratch then you'd need to look at have 2 seperate divisions as that wouldn't be fair competition for all. At least if it's played with some sort of handicap allowance it balances the field making it enjoyable for everyone

Re: Winter Eclectic rules discussion
agreed mav. judging by the response to the poll, perhaps best to forget the option of less/more cards based on handicap. my inclination would be to choose how many counting rounds there ought to be ( 5 or 6 ), and set everyone's handicap allowance at the beginning with no cuts. at least then there is a consistent playing field to start with. then adjusting scores as you say to suit each courses sss (rather than par) as appropriate.
finally, how do we make sss adjustments for winter greens??!!! our yellow tees measure 6247, with par 72, sss 70. when all winter greens are in play this reduces to about 5400 as you're losing almost 50 yards on each hole! i'd guess our par would change to 68, with sss about 66-67...

That handicapping system actually works in favour of the lower handicappers. If played over 6 rounds, I only lose 2.5 shots whereas a 28 handicapper looses 14 shots
Anyway, handicaps are there for a reason, the lower you go the harder it is to play to it.
Leave as is, it's a tried and tested system.

Re: Winter Eclectic rules discussion
I think we are close to finalising the rules:
1) The format is to be an eclectic strokeplay over a maximum of 8 rounds to be taken before March 31st 2011.
2) For the first card, I will need either a scan, photo or detailed score card giving your score, Par, the SI and your handicap, via email.
PM me or send email and I will reply confirming email if necessary
3) DNF’s on the first card will count as 9, after the first card, I will just need the hole numbers where you have bettered your previous score, and of course the score.
4) If you do not keep a tally yourself, then each round will need a full scorecard.
5) ¾ handicap rounded up from 0.5. There will be no handicap adjustment unless you appear to be a complete bandit and have manipulated your handicap.
6) Par and SSS ratings for courses will undergo an entirely scientific process to equalize any differences. I will not make this up as I go along, I promise
7) Your rounds can be bounce or competition, it is totally up to you. Just have to nominate it prior to playing. Email, PM or post to the Eclectic thread.
8) I will post any results onto the board, hopefully weekly, so all can see what they have to do to make up places.
9) Gimmies – I know some of you never play gimmies whereas others do and the groups they play in expect it. Play the round as you would normally, but I would suggest that if you are putting to better your previous score on that hole, then the ball needs to drop
10) Start date is…………..The day after Remembrance Sunday. Monday 14th November.
11) Hopefully these are all the rules we need for you to enjoy yourselves. Remember, this is supposed to be just a bit of fun, and hopefully it will get exciting at some stage. However I am the judge, jury, executioner, cook, cleaner, slow poster and other choice words and phrases
I'll create a new thread over the weekend confirming all the rules, entrants and will also note who has supplied their handicap and course details.
