3 Clubs and Putter Empty 3 Clubs and Putter

Post by Davie Thu 03 Nov 2011, 11:04 am

I thought we'd done this before but couldn't find it

Got a 3 clubs + putter challenge on Saturday in aid of the Greenkeepers' Xmas fund and trying to decide what to take!

At the moment I'm thinking 3-wood, 5-iron, 9-iron (being a relatively short hitter)

I'm trying to think of the par3s specifically though we've been told already that it's only off the yellows. I was thinking 6-iron and PW but that would leave me short on the par3s

What's your favourite combo?

our group had one of these a couple of months ago. a good test of skill, and requires excellent course management and a little imagination when it all goes wrong! I chose my hybrid 2iron replacement (generally shots between: 175-220yards), 6 iron(110-175), and 52 deg wedge (0-110). Only issue was on the 14th a short par 3, the gap wedge wasn't enough and my 1/2 swing with a 6iron put me through the back. still walked off with par.

It was done as a 5 club comp.

We usually have a 5 club comp. But if ws going to choose 3 clubs and a putter then it'd be.

2 Hybrid - For anything off the tee at par 4's and 5's
5 iron - For anything mid length
9 iron - for anything upto 145-150

I'd ditch the 3 wood and take a 21 degree hybrid. That goes around 190-200 and is easier than a wood to take a bit off of.
Other clubs would be an 8 iron and a 52 wedge

resure/hybrid 7 iron and a wedge should be the way to go.

but if you dont need to have a putter! then dont bother with it , take another club and putt wiuth the edge of the wedge

We had a 3 club (of which putter had to be one) comp in March at the club.
I chose hybrid and 9 iron. A tough test however it really makes you focus and commit to the type of shot demanded to, play sensible golf. Remarkably I shot one of my best rounds (+1 gross). I went out the following day with a full set of 14 and was at least 7/8 shots worse off (cant remember exact). If I was to have the option of 3 + putter I would still go hybrid, 7 iron, 52 wedge

"3 + putter I would still go hybrid, 7 iron, 52 wedge"

yep for sure, so much versitily with that option.

the 7 is the middle club- can do so much with it

rescues can do so much from so many situations.

and the 52 a wedge is again very versitlie

I'm going to have to dig out my old lightweight carry bag for tomorrow - a pull trolly seems a bit overkill for 3 clubs and putter!

Just to update this thread the 3 clubs and putter comp was great fun. No one took it too seriously and a great time was had by all.

I was very pleased with the way I played today but more importantly to mt how I thought about how best to use those 3 clubs.

The comp was played off full handicaps and only off the yellows for the men but me and my lady partner got 38 pts (34 off my own card alone). The winning scores were outrageous though! 3 pairs on 44pts, 2nd place was 45 pts and the winners with 46!

The good point was that the winners only got token prizes and all the proceeds went to the greenkeeping and clubhouse staff Ale
