Spitting
Is this the most offensive action that there is on a sports field?
I saw the incident in the WOlves v Wigan game where the Wigan defender Alcatraz or summat spat at a Wolves defender. I wandered whether that would be deemed worse than a racial slur. Listening to 606 today and Michael Gray said if it happened to him he would accept a red card for decking whoever it was.
Disgusting and I can't think of anything more insulting myself and have to say if someone spat at me in a sporting arena, I'd make him regret it for sure.
What sort of punishment should this Alcatraz receive?

Re: Spitting
A dig from the player he spat at!
Frank Rijkaard for me was the worst I had seen. That and Diouf and that Mijhalovic.
It is such a disgusting act. In my park football days I was spat at, and I nutted the individual and to my luck the ref missed the spit and the nut.
I am sure it would promote such a reaction from most who have had it done to them under any circumstances.

Re: Spitting
Spitting in general, regardless of whether it's at someone is disgusting and needless. There's no need for any sportsman to spit full stop whether it's in the ground or in Rudi Voller's luxurious mullet.
I passed a guy in the street who spat out a pavement pearl. I just about threw up on the spot.

Spitting at someone is a definite no go.
Im not sure if you can stop someone from spitting on the ground though during a match.
Was there any action taken against Tiger Woods for spitting on the green?

Re: Spitting
Yes, YI Man, the intolerable Woods was fined for spitting. No need for anyone to spit in any sporting circumstance.

I've never quite understood why footballers get so het up about being spat at. I'd much rather someone spat at me than broke my leg for example. I mean it's a truly disgusting act in all walks of life and I've never felt the need in my life, but that doesn't stop footballers spitting/snotting non stop so that obviously isn't the problem they have with it.

Someone spat at me once playing and I shoved the guy to the ground. He couldn't get up and was just lying on the floor.
The problem was his radias broke and poking out through his arm!
Justice.

Re: Spitting
My old P.E teacher used to make any of us he saw spitting do 20 push ups nose first into it.
A right hard bar steward he was but the teacher I truly respected the most.
The taste of phlegm wasn't so bad after a while.
I salute you Mr Barrett!
But yes spitting on another human being is just wrong.

Cant stand spitting, and to be honest spitting on another human being is disgusting and punishment must be taken towards anyone that does that!

Re: Spitting
I think it's because of the nature of the insult that spitting brings. Of course it has no long term effects that a broken leg or similar, but for me it's the insult.Hibbz wrote:JPX wrote:Is this the most offensive action that there is on a sports field?

Re: Spitting
I'm not sure footballers can complain about being spat at when they do it all the time anyway. A guy sliding for tackle is just as likely to get a face full of loogie as he would if he criticised rudi voller's mullet.

It's a South American problem in this sport, they will do anything to wind the opposition up in an attempt to have them sent off. Pitiful!

Why stop there, how about public flogging, or even execution?
While spitting is obviously unpleasant and spitting at someone deserves some kind of ban, it seems that quite a few people have their whole world view cockeyed here.
I heard Shearer once say it's the worst thing you can do on a football pitch, really Mr. Shearer, even worse than deliberately stamping on an opponents head like you did to Lennon, or is it as bad as Rooneys deliberate off-the-ball elbow on McCarthy last season, is it even as bad as a racist or homophobic insult?
Clearly spitting isn't nice, but people need to get a reality check here, no matter what form of ban Alcaraz gets, he could even be let off, it's not going to stop this from being a very rare occurance and there are many, far more important issues in football for people to get themselves wound up over.

Spitting at someone is low but I have to say I did laugh a lot when Rijkard gobbed on Vollers perm. Vollers face was priceless.

Again I fail to belive such comments, you're both either lying, or you both need real help, to compare spitting with racist/homophbic insults is a joke and to claim that spitting is "the ultimate insult" is just about the saddest thing I've ever heard.
It will never happen, but I can guarantee that I can insult ANYONE and within 5 seconds I'd get a reaction worthy of serious jail time; and would use such insults here and now just to prove my point, but I would get banned; spitting is just a filthy habit in comparison and if you really think it's so bad, you've simply never been insulted properly.

Re: Spitting
I disagree entirely. I can take any verbal insults, but spit on me and I'll be in danger of doing something I'll regret.ReallyReal wrote:Again I fail to belive such comments, you're both either lying, or you both need real help, to compare spitting with racist/homophbic insults is a joke and to claim that spitting is "the ultimate insult" is just about the saddest thing I've ever heard.

Interesting quote I heard on TalkSport this morning from Dion Dublin....
"There's only one thing worse than being racially abused, and that is being spat at"

I thought sleeping with someone's wife was the ultimate insult
