Amalgamations Empty Amalgamations

Post by Ar aghaidh le cheile Mon 07 Nov 2011, 7:51 pm

What counties allow amalgamations to play in their county senior football championships and why.

I noticed yesterday Tipp final was won by an amalgamation of three clubs. The negative is they cant play in the provincial club series so what is the benefit.

Theres mid-kerry or something in the Kerry football championship isn't there? I suppose it makes for a better standard but there are alot of negitives like lack of team spirit and supporters can feel a bit disconacted. The same things can be said about collages playing, they have no fans and a one point yesterday UCC had 13 kerry men playing for them. 13!!! Total disgrace.

Agree Curry, it's ridiculous.

I remember Stephen Lucey one year playing for the following teams:

UCD Sigerson team
UCD Fitzgibbon team
UCD in Dublin Senior Hurling Championship
UCD in Dublin Senior Football Championship
UCD in Leinster Provincial Hurling Championship
Croom in Limerick Under 21 Hurling
Croom in Limerick Under 21 Football
Croom in Senior Hurling
Croom in Intermediate Football
Limerick in Under 21 Football
Limerick in Under 21 Hurling(all the way to All Ireland)
Limerick in Senior Hurling
Limerick in Senior Football

guess what......he's been plagued by injuries in the last 3 or 4 years.........

Didnt' know that they couldn't play in the provincials, but otherwise don't see the problem with peolpe getting together and forming a new club. MacDonaghs is based in an area where little football is played. There are some senior county hurlers on that team who are obviously good enough to play senior football as well, so why shouldn't they set up a club to compete at senior level, if their own clubs wont. The fact that they can't compete in the provincials is outrageous, surely by wining their county, they have earned the right.

Yeah I wouldn't really mind if the amalgamated clubs could compete in the provincials but its the collages that really get me, they are of no benfit to anyone.

I don't mind club's joining together if they are struggling for number's but I hate college team's playing in county champ's.

There was a big article in the Examiner a few weeks ago about this. Apart from having some of the best young players in the country and the best facilities, personally, I can't see why it's such an issue. Surely, they are raising the standards.

Could someone tell me if a player is playing for UCC for instance and he meets his club in the provincials, who does he play for? Excuse my lack of knowledge but until relatively recently I never took much notice of club GAA, now I'm glued.

Most would play for their clubs. Cork is host to some of the biggest and brightest minds in the country. George Boole studied there so it can't all be bad,

No I'm just saying there are aload of Kerrymen on the team instead of Corkmen. Sure everyone knows we Corkonians are the smartest, Best looking and most talented people in the world. zen
