Jason Queally targets team sprint spot for London 2012

Former Olympic champion Jason Queally will attempt to seal a place in Great Britain's team sprint squad for the London 2012 Olympics.

The 40-year-old, who won gold and silver in Sydney 11 years ago, had hoped to race in the team pursuit.

But after struggling to be selected Queally has changed focus and will trial with the sprinters after the World Championships (23-27 March).

The GB sprint team won Olympic gold in Beijing four years ago.

But first-man Jamie Staff has since retired, and GB team management are still deciding the best composition of the new trio.

The team of Sir Chris Hoy, Jason Kenny and Matt Crampton could only take bronze at the Manchester World Cup in February while the pursuit team - without Queally - romped to gold.

Queally will not be in the running for a place in the sprint team at the World Championships in March but will have trials with them in April.

Having taken 1km gold and team sprint silver in Sydney, he won the world title in the team sprint in 2005, alongside Hoy and Staff, but failed to make the sprint squad for the 2008 Games.

Queally then joined Anthony Kappes in disability tandem racing, which involves a full-sighted pilot, with a visually impaired partner, aiming to reach the 2012 Paralympics.

But the Chorley rider was subsequently named in the able-bodied Great Britain squad for the 2010 World Championships in Denmark.

That left Kappes searching for a new partner, as rules state able-bodied riders can only ride in the Paralympics two years after they last competed in an able-bodied event.

On his return Queally, who won sprint silver in Sydney, had initially targeted a place in the pursuit team in London.

But the squad of Bradley Wiggins, Geraint Thomas, Ed Clancy, Steven Burke and Andy Tennant looked strong in taking gold at the Manchester World Cup and appear to be one of GB cycling's best hopes for gold in London.
