Another BBC related complaint.
This is a quote from their article about Treviso/Ospreys. Now, this seems a bit juvenile, and failing that, terrible journalism. Whoever wrote this should probably consider a new profession.
"Adam Jones cried off because of a calf injury to force a late Ospreys change."

Well for a man who is payed to write I'd expect him to be able to employ basic grammar, and follow that up with the use of 'cried off' it's just a very poorly written statement. The writer uses phrases that wouldn't be out of place on a junior school playground, not on a national news website.

Just corrected that for you...
But yes, cried off sounds sh*t.

Cheers Cari, alcohol is not my friend when ranting. But nevertheless, I am not paid for my grammatical errors, whereas the writer is.

Re: Another BBC related complaint.
Is it possible he meant "carried"?
This would at least imply that he was careless in not checking his work, rather than being juvenile...

No chance
There aren't enough people in the med team to carry him off
QED must be cried off

Re: Another BBC related complaint.
Whats the problem with the use of cried off?
Its a common phrase.
Honestly if I worked for BBC and this was the biggest complaint I'd be very happy.

"Cried off" is a pretty common phrase for this type of thing. Wiktionary uses sport as the example to explain its meaning.
Sorry, but I have to cry off the game on Saturday, as my mother-in-law is coming to visit.
It's not great journalism (maybe his mother-in-law was coming to visit and it was just an excuse?), but it's hardly worth losing sleep over.

I think you're annoyed as "cried off" makes it sound like Jones is a slap right?

Actually just brightened my evening, to picture Adam Jones "crying off" because the coaches told him he couldn't play makes me snort.

Has the OP never heard the phrase before? Quite a common one used in sports journalism.

Agree this is a baffling complaint.
Re: Another BBC related complaint.
I think it was the next line that provoked the complaint.
Adam Jones cried off because of a calf injury to force a late Ospreys change. When questioned about the injury he said that it was ´vealy sore' and he couldn´t continue.
Got no problems with the complaint. That´s a shocker.

That sentence wasn't mentioned in the original post and the posted clearly said "cried off" was the issue for him.

That´s right march me back 10m Stag.
No room for poetic licence here. We need more debate on the use of cried off. In these dark, financial times, not enough emphasis is placed on the banal and trivial things of life. Somehow I can´t help but feel if our politicians were more at ease with this phrasal verb, we wouldn´t be in this mess in the first place.

Cry off
To break or withdraw from a promise, agreement, or undertaking.
If I was Adam Jones, I'd take em to Court for defamation
Scandalous slight on his Welsh manhood.
