Hamilton v Alonso
Over the years we have seen some great feuds.
Is this one the next chapter in the history of F1?
It started off when they were team mates and has progressed following their split to different teams.
Does this have the making of a great feud for years to come?

Y I Man, that's an interesting one!
It is a simmering feud which is likely to exist as long as both of them are on the same grid.
Unfortunately it seems likely that the rivalry which might otherwise be so entertaining, is likely to be thwarted by McLaren's inability to produce a competitive car. The real F1 fan can only hope that their machinery is well matched, for the consensus is that these two are the finest drivers of their day.
My apologies to anyone who holds a different view.

Re: Hamilton v Alonso
As you say the rivalry between the two is there for all to see.
But with the rumours coming out the Red Bull camp today that they might look to make an offer to Hamilton, this could give him the car to challenge Alonso on a more level footing so to speak.
But for this coming season, whether it be for 1st & 2nd or 4th & 5th, i cant wait to see these two going head to head on the tracks again.

Yes, there are many 'in the paddock' as it were, who hold a similar view.
My opinion is that Hamilton has had little choice thus far, other than to persevere with the questionable adventures at McLaren. His lack of personal management last year was very much an act of faith; so typical of him but perhaps naive.
Even with such prodigious talent, it is easy for a career to take a wrong turn.

"Fernando Alonso thinks it is much too early to write rivals McLaren off - despite both Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button being pessimistic about their chances for 2011."
Do you think this is just 'psychological games' or is he really not ruling then out?

If he can convince others that they're a threat when he knows they're not, it makes him (and any and all achievements of his team) look even better doesn't it?

Best of luck. I think both you and he will need plenty of it this time around!

Re: Hamilton v Alonso
They are both great drivers and, looking at their stats from the past few seasons they are very close. However, this year I expect Alonso to pip Hamilton with the advantage of having a better car.

Re: Hamilton v Alonso
Yes, I tend to agree.
Actually, I'll say something which some may find controversial: I think Hamilton is the better driver.
They were matched in Hamilton's first season when Alonso was already at the top of his game. Since then, Hamilton has got better and his car has got worse…

Re: Hamilton v Alonso
Interesting point about Hamilton being the better driver Cosicave.
I think Hamilton has a bit more patience than Alonso, but as its been shown they can both be erratic drivers at times taking real risks.
Do you think Alonso has already peaked?

Hamilton
I know my point is contentious but I was aware of Hamilton before he came into F1. He is the only driver I have ever had no doubts about before his first appearance on an F1 grid. (I'd seen him developing as a youngster and had little doubt about him). And for those who remember back to BBC606 at the time, I not only said so but predicted that he would be fighting for an unprecedented World Championship in his first season. This was a raw Hamilton who effectively threw it all away himself. But this guy has now evolved significantly, demonstrating an ability to alter driving style more than any other present day driver in my opinion. In spite of that, he is head and shoulders above every other top driver in terms of meaningful overtaking statistics.
Alonso
There can be no doubt that this is one of the best drivers of the past two decades. In my opinion he out-performed a Schumacher at the top of his game with every conceivable advantage. Has he peaked? Well, if he has, he's still enjoying the view and it may be some time before he descends! But really, my point was that he was already close to the top of his game when Hamilton matched him. And the only significant change since then has been a definite improvement in Hamilton. This does not mean Alonso has got worse; he's not. Wouldn't it be great to see them in the same team?
Of course, it's impossible to be completely objective. These are just my opinions and I may be biased because of prior knowledge of Hamilton. But I want say here and now that I am not a fan of any driver, and that includes Hamilton. I just watch their driving.

Re: Hamilton v Alonso
I would say if anything, knowledge of Hamilton before F1 makes you more objective Cosicave. Prior knowledge means you won't have been swayed by ITV's Hami-lovefest (some lapped it up, and to others it was disgusting).
I was fortunate to spot Lewis at an early age, and even then it was obvious he was something special. I followed his career closely and had similar expectations to you for his rookie season.

Re: Hamilton v Alonso
Just to put this on the table, i am a fan of Hamilton and want to see him win this year. But i have respect for other drivers as well. All in all I think this could be one of the closest seasons yet and im looking forward to seeing how Hamilton & Alonso square up.

Yes Y I M.
I hope that politics and machinery doesn't preclude it. Unfortunately I feel that we may be deprived of this, as I suspect their cars will not be well matched this season.
