Re: Martin O'Neill new Sunderland Boss
Good appoinment in both ways.
O'Neil joins a club that he supported as a kid, which has ambition and money. A biggish side that has been starved of success.
Sunderland get a good manager, with a proven track record to help them try and make the jump up to challanging for europe.
Summer should be intresting up there, as i can see alot of departures and arrivals.

Re: Martin O'Neill new Sunderland Boss
Good manager, in fact he is excellent, gets the best out of average players, so at Sunderland he has plenty t work with.
......but when he finds that he can't spend any money, I amagine he might welll jump ship again!
Time will tell though and I wish him luck its good to have someone with his enthusiasm back in the game!
Hope Bruce doesnt start getting TV gigs though

Re: Martin O'Neill new Sunderland Boss
As a Sunderland fan I think I would just preferred Hughes, only just though, and I think O'Neal is a good option.
But its one of those ones that has been talked about in the past before and a lot of fans hoped it would happen, so seems fated it will almost certainly end in tears and failure.
He does have a lot of average players to work with its true, but its the same everage squad that most of the pundits had finishing top 10 or higher at the start of the season. Couldnt figure out quite why personally.

Re: Martin O'Neill new Sunderland Boss
Not sure what the pundits were thinking, he bought terribly in the summer IMO, and after letting go Bent and Gyan (for whatever reason) and not replacing them, he was on a hiding to nothing.
A lot of rubbish throughout the team really, and the players he bought were either finished (Brown, O'Shea), too young/unproven (Kim Jon Il, Whikham) or from a team that had just got relegated (Vaughan, Gardner) - so despite spending a fortune, he probably made the squad worse.
Look at the squad from the last game......
20 Westwood
02 Bardsley
04 Turner
05 Brown
11 Richardson
16 O'Shea
06 Cattermole
07 Larsson
14 Colback
28 Sessegnon
52 Bendtner
Substitutes
24 Carson, 08 Gardner, 15 Vaughan, 18 Meyler, 23 McClean, 27 Elmohamady, 17 Ji Dong-Won
Some serious rubbish there

Re: Martin O'Neill new Sunderland Boss
I'm expecting him to increase the wage bill, spend a bit of money but eventually lead to no huge success. Would have liked to see a younger manager given a go.

Re: Martin O'Neill new Sunderland Boss
They look rubbish now because they have been playing rubbish lately. If you listed the squads for most of the clubs outside the top 8 they are made up of similar names, no better, no worse. There are an awful lot of very average players plying their trade in the Premier League.

True Diggers, but then you look at the players he has let go, particularly Bent, Gyan, despite buying what 11 players in teh summer? it has gotten markedly worse!

Re: Martin O'Neill new Sunderland Boss
He's inherited a half-decent team. Gordon/Westwood/Mignolet are 3 decent GK options, Turner isn't the worst defender, but midfield is where he's strongest. Vaughan, Larsson, Gardner, Colback & Sessegnon give him plenty of options. Certainly enough to not take them down any further.

i think its a good appointment. He has some good players to work with, and he will steer them clear of relegation.

Bent was a big loss but Im not sure than one can be pinned on Bruce. The whole Gyan thing was just weird but to be honest he was never that great for us that often, Id rather have Bendtner in the side. If ONeal can get him playing to anything like his potential he will be a real handfull.
The other player he let go for big money was Henderson and that was a no brainer for the cash we got.

Firstly, it's not confirmed, and either way, he's not gonna fix you over night and we'll still pump you at SJP.
Secondly, it's 'O'Neill'.

To be honest Newcastle are a shining example of how a complete load of gash can do OK in the Premier league. The pumping comment...just odd really.

Yep. And 5under1and are a shining example of how easy it is to spunk £30 million up the wall, urine off your best strikers and replace them with utter shiote!

Pumping and now spunking. How homo erotic can you get ?
Yes, its not like Newcastle havent wasten any money on players before is it....blah blah bla...zzzzzzzz our crowds are bigger than yours yawn yawn.
Fact is we are crap but will hopefully get better if/when O'neill comes. You are massively over performing and IMO will get found out second half of the season.
I doubt there will be much more than a few points in it come the end of the season personally but we shall see.

Diggers, fact is we've got 3 or 4 very good players and a good team spirit; we've deserved every point we've won so far this season. We all know it won't last, but it's put us in a strong position to get a top 10 place this season.

Re: Martin O'Neill new Sunderland Boss
Not really, King, I find the whole Newcastle Sunderland thing pretty dull. We should be united in a sense of utter mediocrity and under achievement rather than all the inane bickering that goes on. (also I grew up in Redcar after moving from Houghton Le Spring so I reserve most of my contempt for the smoggies as I got so much stick at school for neing a mackem)
But it all usually comes down to who is doing the least carp most of the time. Fair play to Pardew though, I really never thought he had it in him. Despite having a utter of a Chairman, a pretty average squad and a manager who hasnt done a lot before youve had some good times already this season.
Its a funny old game.

Re: Martin O'Neill new Sunderland Boss
Martin O'Neill is a fantastic choice, great manager, I can speak from personal experiance, he's one of those guys who pulls the fans toether and gets a club moving in the right direction
He's been a tremendous success everywhere he's been, he doesn't hang around though if he feels he's taken a club as far as he can, three 6th place finishes in a row with Aston Villa in his last job, a team that failed to make any kind of impact for a few years beforehand
O'Neill is a guy who if properly backed will get the absolute maximum response and effort from the team, they'll fulfill their potential under him

Re: Martin O'Neill new Sunderland Boss
It will be interesting to see how they get on, I think they will be like Villa when O'Neill was manager of them, they will improve a bit but not make any really inroads, he could have some more money though so that might make a difference. They could have pick a worse manager though although I think they should have gone for Hughes.

Looking pretty good so far. A few late winners certainly haven't done his cause any harm.

It's always hard to judge on the first month or two because of the 'honeymoon' period a lot of managers go through. A great result nonetheless.
