Favourite non-boxing related story involving a boxer
Bit of thought required here chaps (so some of you may be instantly disqualified).
Back in 1944 a fighter was doing a promotional tour of the UK and the manager of one of football's greatest ever clubs hatched a cunning plan. George Kay, a huge boxing fan in his own right, asked this fighter to sign for his club and so it was that Liverpool Football Club's most famous signing came about.
The fighter in question? The World Heavyweight Champion, Joe Louis!

A story goes that ex middleweight great Stanley Ketchel, had once set up his training camp at a roadhouse and one day an automobile party drove up to eat. One of the party ordered stewed tripe and onions at which point the waiter, who was German and probably didn't know what tripe was, informed them there was none in the house, nor in the neighborhood. The party insisted and said they would wait an hour if need be. They also, apparently, became a bit agitated and were trying to bulldoze the waiter, whereupon Ketchel decided to get involved. Quickly donning a waiter's coat and apron Stan approached the party and said:
"Gentlemen, you can have the tripe in ten minutes It's on the fire now."
Ketchel proceeded to the kitchen and sliced up a small white rubber hose. Over this he poured some melted butter mixed with flour, a few boiled onions, heated the mixture red hot and served it in a covered dish, after which he disappeared behind a screen to await results. Legend has it that, after the initial swearing and cursing, the party saw the funny side and cracked open a bottle of wine to share with Stan.

Chris Eubank getting done for holding a "demonstration" inside a government no demonstration area was quite amusing. More so when it was only him driving a tractor round with no-one else in sight!

Re: Favourite non-boxing related story involving a boxer
There's a story of a lad who climbed over the wall of a boxer's house with the firm intention of insulting him (yes, he was drunk!). The shirtless fighter confronted the intruder in his garden and asked him what he thought he was doing. He was met with a volley of abuse and to to add further insult, the intruder tried to twist this fighter's nipple ring. At this point, all efforts at concilliation went out of the window and Nigel Benn KO'd the intruder before calling the police.
Also liked the story of how Nigel chased a bag thief through the airport and beat him up after he'd stolen a small bag containing family photos and Nigel's beloved bible.

Dave, your tale of the drunk who had a pop at Nigel Benn reminds me of a similar one.
It might have been LaMotta, but whoever it was was sitting in an Irish bar in New York when some local drunk got a bit uppity with him. Drawing a blank with the verbal abuse, said drunk decided instead to swing for, ( let's say it was Jake, ) LaMotta, whereupon Jake, without changing expression, quietly said to the drunk :
" If you hit me, and I find out about it, you'll be in a world of trouble. "
One of the best put downs I've ever heard.

Oscar De La Hoya put a status on twitter the other day (I read it second hand, I don't use that rubbish) saying how he was able to drink because he had a driver for the night. Next status he's offering $1m to anyone who hands it in, followed by $1.5m. He 'found it in his car'. Definitely a strange one.

Scott, that post makes absolutely no sense whatsoever....were you out drinking with Oscar when you wrote it?

What ARE you suggesting, Scott? I didn't realise you were that way inclined. Anyway, there's a limit to what I'll accept from you but rest assured dear boy, your continued silence on the forum really is all I require.
Have a nice day though!

Why DOES Truss seem so keen on having several men pitting themselves against him all at once..?

Scott, it's not my fault you sound like you're either
a) in a strop
b) on the edge of ending it all
c) just found out your last sausage roll got nicked from the fridge
d) all of the above
Keep smiling! After all, it's Friday and there's beer to be drunk and a woman to be ragged every which way but sideways

Re: Favourite non-boxing related story involving a boxer
Oh, and on topic: my nominee has to be for the story of the elderly former armed forces boxer who found himself confronted by a burglar in his home. The old fella is no-one famous, but was about 80. He still gave the intruder a good pasting though. Warms the cockles, so it does. I'll see if I can find a link.
Here it is: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1196479/Pictured-The-battered-bruised-face-burglar-got-wrong-72-year-old-boxer.html[/strike]
And I was wrong, he was only 72!

Re: Favourite non-boxing related story involving a boxer
'Wont bother' sounds like suicidal thoughts to you? You can't talk about being in a strop when someone you think of as an idiot has you capitalising posts, using dozens of exclamations marks and hanging on his every word. It was a throwaway comment lets not go OTT. Have a good weekend.

Dave I always like the story about Jack Dempsey when two teenage kids tried to get into Jack's taxi on this way to a boxing match in New Yorks Madison Sq Garden, Jack knocked them both out thats fair enough, but old Jack was in his 70's at that point.

I remember when the Met issued a photofit of a criminal - they used a picture of Nigel Benn and struck a hat on it.
