Players that won a slam after 1000 matches played?
Federer has played 993 matches, by January 2012 he is expected to reach the 1000 matches played mark. Anyone know how many players won a slam after hitting the 1000 matches mark? According to wikipedia, Sampras retired after playing 984 matches, so he won his last slam before hitting the 1000 matches played mark for example.

Good question. I'm going to guess nobody. Only Lendl stands a chance in my book.

Interesting info JHM, so we can say they dont tend to win slams much at all over 1000 matches - and in that respect good call eraldeen for picking that number. Fed could win USO and break all the records...

That is very interesting. Looking at when Lendl and Connors won their last slam, Federer could be somewhere around Lendl's mark(close to 1005 matches played) at the AO and somewhere around Connors' mark(close to 1035 matches played) at the FO next year. Maybe AO and FO are Fed's best chances to win a major next year.

Yeah, that could be another record for Federer.

Well he'll certainly chalk up his 1,000th match very soon. Another landmark that's imminent is most wins in GS matches. Fed is currently four behind Connors who has 232 wins. A good run at the AO and that record is gone
After that, Fed needs just one win at RG to complete at least 50 wins at EACH of the four GS venues - something not done before.
Reckon Rafa could, praps, get more wins. He's on 143 at the moment and even if he completed the Grand Slam for each of the next three years he would still be short. But he might do it.
In some ways the 50 at each venue might be harder to emulate.

If Federer had not lost to Horna and Ancic, the Connors record would have been gone quite a long time ago.
