Shot of the year Empty Shot of the year

Post by JAS Sun 11 Dec 2011, 7:04 pm

Now that the golfing year of 2011 is drawing to a close I finally get to ask...What was the shot of the year? If truth be told I've been waiting 11 months for this...I still dont think there was anything to match this one.....

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=65gsvYw9MGQ

I see the PGA tour site is doing a countdown...why don't we have our top 5 too?

My memory is pants so it will be difficult for me to answer this one.

Found this earlier, it is pretty good.

Indeed Mac...there just had to be at least one shot from McIlroy that week. I think he had a few stunners the first 3 days of the Masters as well.

Another one of my favourite memories of the year was the shear audacity of Big Phil getting Bones to tend the flag on the 72nd hole at Torrey Pines....when he still had 100 yards to go!!

I'll vote for Bubba. Like Wayne Rooney's goal vs Man City, you've just got to smile when you see it.

But I really enjoyed this one also:

Great thread!

For some reason I can't now open this: Tom Watson's hole in one at The Open. (Playing with Tom Lewis?)

Any of the long putts Luke got close to avoid 3 putting for 17 years, or whatever it was!

The most memorable for me was McIlroy's shocking duck hook at Augusta that nearly ended up on some guys patio. Not really in fitting with the aim of the thread, but I imagine it is the one shot that people remember as vividly as any other this year.

Redrage, a 'shocking duck hook' is a huge exaggeration. Most were agreed at the time, had he set it off 2 yards right it would have been perfect

One of the Brit players said that, the yanks said differently. Unfortunately there is no video footage to back up either claim.

There's loads of footage of that shot. It's a pull, never a duck hook

To be fair RR, I've just looked on YouTube and can find no real footage. Interesting as I've seen the shot on tv a hundred times

Well there was no live footage at the time but this is the best I can find on you tube...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3zVkqFXXcO0
Not that you can see well but it looks more than just a pull. Umpteen articles refer to it as a duck hook, even Westwood calls it a hook in an interview going into the last round at the US Open. That will do for me, I don't care to continue splitting hairs about how bad a shot it was (and it was a bad shot, not unlucky), the point was it was probably the most memorable shots of the year, for all the wrong reasons.

There's no way to see from that if the ball hooks or if its straight left. I remember it being straight left like a pull rather than low and turning like a hook but I'll agree that it was memorable OK

I thought Quiros for eagle(?) yesterday was a pretty damn fine effort. May not have been shot of the year, but a ruddy good effort nonetheless.

Also, Rory at the US Open in the final round, I forget which hole, but it was one that rolled and rolled and judging by his golf that tournament, it'd have been no shock if it had gone in.

I'll go for Alvaro's hole-in-one in the final round on the Dubai Desert Classic. Extra special as it came a few holes after he'd lost a ball up a tree!

The fact that the bunker shot mentioned above was (temporarily until i Just remembered it now!!) more momorable than ole Tom's hole in one, 4 iron about 175 straight into a stiff breeze, at St. George's, gives an indication of how good it was!

Shot of the year... ME holing out from 200 yards for albatross on the 18th at Littlestone. Yahoo

Unfortunately the TV cameras were not present that day.

I thought Bubba's driver off the deck in Hawaii was pretty special, but he only got an eagle out of it - pah.

No one mentioned Miguel Angel Jimenez's second shot at the 17th at Valderrama. One of the toughest holes in golf and he went with a fairway wood right at the flag across the water. Brave.

Don't think the SOTY can be a 15 foot putt at a limited field event..............

he missed the putt tho! a bit like how Mickelson's 6 iron off the straw at Augusta last year was ruined by the missed putt!

Surely the criteria of the shot, must be the old cliche "one shot at a time". Every shot must be taken in isolation. What happened next should not be relevant.

great shot by MAJ but wouldn't describe it as brave, he had to go for it to challenge for the tournament and dumping it in the water would prob only have cost 1 shot.

It was a par 5 so if he had dumped it into the water he would have to had played his 4th again over the water and good chance of a bogey 6. By going right at the flag he had a good chance of an eagle, therefore a 3 shot difference.

I assume his forth would have been a wedge from a drop zone or the edge of the water?

Got PGA Tour no1 shot of the year. I think deservedly so, given the circumstances and high tarriff nature of the shot. Steve Stricker's bunker shot on the 72nd at the John Deere was pretty special too

ok, if he hadn't gone for it, ie layed up, he would have hit the green in 3 and prob made par. If he had gone for it and put it in the water, he would have played his 4th from the drop zone, a flick with a wedge and then 2 putts for bogey (although agood chance of getting up and down for par), IE ONE DROPPED SHOT.

Haas' shot's been over-egged IMO. Good under the circumstances but the ball wasn't even submerged and, from the video, is nowhere even half covered. It's basically a simple greenside bunker splash (was certainly that in any case) shot; was a good one though.
