I mentioned accepting defeat gracefully, and a 131-replies article has now been turned into a poll.
Press 1 for Yes, Press 2 for No. Press '0' for the Operator.
'0' '0' 0' '0' '0'....... sorry there is no one available to answer your call. Please hang up.

Hard to answer without knowing the job description and criteria being assessed. Was it who had the better career as a top ten tennis player. I that case Greg would win. However if it was who had the better coaching experience and had already worked with the U16's and U18's then it's Leon.

What exactly is the job description for a Davis Cup captain?
This article describes some of the skills required by a great Davis Cup captain. Its talking about 2 Davis Cup captains that are considered to be amongst the best. Tarpischev and Forget.

A few things stand out.
You have to accept that most players have coaches of their own.
Captains must not be afraid to make tough calls that may upset individual team members.
A good Captain should be able to inspire players and teams who may be considered the underdog.
I also think you can get a good idea about the sort of qualities needed for the role by looking at Davis Cup captains who lead other countries. Its quite obvious what experience most countries think is required. So who has the more similar skills to other countries Davis Cup captains? Rusedski or Smith?

That's fine Hawkeye but the example you have given shows that different people have different skill sets and can still suceed. Guy Forget was a top ten player (got to No4 loke Greg). However if you read Tarpishevs resume you could hardly call him a top tennis player (according to the ATP site he also played 5 matches on tour with a 2-3 record). He also became national coach at 26. I'm sure there would have been better Russian ex-players at the time who thought they were more qualified but look at the success that Tarpischev has had. So the question is were the LTA looking for an ex-player to be coach (they had used this approach previously without success) or someone that they were aware of that had good coaching and motivational skills.

Btw the way was very disappointed today. Was picking in-laws up from the airport and bought The Times while waiting. There was no Neil Harman article. What do The Times pay these part-time journalists

Let us take the following DC tie (not Fed Cup - will look at Fed cup later) as an example....
JPN DC Captain profile - http://www.atpworldtour.com/Tennis/Players/Ta/E/Eiji-Takeuchi.aspx
IND DC Captain profile -
http://www.channel6magazine.com/article/article.asp?name1=feb09b1.inc&name2=feb09b2.inc&name3=Article
http://www.daviscup.com/en/results/tie/details.aspx?tieId=100016233
Can you tell us what qualities are required to be a good DC coach?
