What is Federer's best attribute
What makes Federer so great?
Roger Federer is a Swiss tennis player who is currently number 3 in the rankings. He is recognised by many as one of the greats in the game with a superb all-round game. Even the mighty Swiss does have some weaknesses though, his mental strength has been questionable (2 match points US Open SF 2 years in a row) and his backhand tends to collapse at times.
However let's forget these weaknesses for now, this article is about the positive side of Federer. What is his best shot/ which shot has improved the most!
Potential categories:

Re: What makes Federer so great?
I actually think Federer's mental strength and backhand are good!
The way he manages to contain himself mentally throughout even the most challenging of matches is very impressive. He is rarely negative with himself. This is an area of mental strength that he is perhaps unmatched in by current players. He is able to bounce back and rationalise even the toughest of losses (maybe having won what he has won helps... ). He doesn't get over excited either within a match. He saves a lot of mental energy this way. Some players can do this because they are perhaps not so affected by wins and losses. I think Federer cares very much judging my his reactions after a match but he able to control his emotions whilst playing.
Unfortunately for him his biggest rival has a lethal topspin forehand that when matched against his backhand is the better shot. Other players do not possess this weapon so against them his backhand is very effective.
As for all the other shots you've listed. Well he's great at them all.
Federer is just great! I don't understand how any tennis fan cannot agree with this.

i agree with most of the analysis by hawkeye. to me his greatness is reflected by his grace, cotrolled aggression, and also by his occasional drop in form as shown by dropped matchpoints and bagel set loss as in FO. he is human.

Re: What makes Federer so great?
I can't see the point of this thread either. We've had similar threads to this in the past at the appropriate juncture in time.
amritia3ee, as you're a self confessed Nadal fan, of course you would say he's not as good as Nadal, tell us something we don't know! Nor do I see why you started a thread on Federer and then state the view he's not as good as Nadal which is entirely irrelevant to the thread topic. No wonder so few Fed fans like myself haven't been interested in posting on this thread.
When Nadal overtakes Fed's haul of 16 grand slams, you might get many more agreeing with you that Nadal is better. Until then, seek solace with your merry band of Nadal fans and dwindling media commentators who take that view too.

That seems to be the real topic of discussion. You, SA, HE, Tenez and many others can continue the usual Fedal debates. Just shows a dearth of imagination.

Re: What makes Federer so great?
Well then you have to include all the other exhibitions then by that logic but as you surely know they aren't counted officially i think you just got it wrong there!
1) The two 'Matches for Africa' are 1-1,
2) Rafa won in UAE 7-6 7-6
3) Rafa won 7-5 at the clash of the champions
4) Rafa wins in the 'Battle of the surfaces'
So if exhibitions counted it would be 21-10 rafa but as it doesn't the head to head is 17-9

Re: What makes Federer so great?
It's funny how a thread about what makes Federer so great (interestingly started by a new Nadal fan on this forum) becomes a thread to bash Federer with.
The motivation is so transparent that it's no surprise many of the contributions are from Nadal fans as opposed to real admirers of Federer, which presumably is who the thread is for?
The fact SA is contributing says it all, I'm amazed he's still coming back on the forum after his utter humiliation of the final set tie breaker thread, oh, how many laughs that gave us all! That really did prove some posters really don't have a clue what they're talking about!

As is well known, as your such a well known Federer hater, as is proven with the venom with which you show complete hatred of Federer and anyone who defends him, and done so by personally denigrating not just Federer but also anyone on the forum who defends him, it's easy to show it's you, who is the rabid Federer hater.
Someone who says they like the way Federer plays is a 'rabid Federer-worshipper(s)' and it's easy to see in your posts you're happy to attack posters personally just for expressing a liking (even if the person isn't a Federer fan). Vicious, puerile and personal perfectly describes your posts. You can't stick to the tennis, it's usually a sign of someone who knows they're losing the argument.

Indeed, it isn't but having seen how you belittled Fedex is the best earlier, it shows you're still up to your old tricks of insulting other posters. His wife had nothing to do with his posts, but you somehow think it's acceptable to drag his wife into it?
At least Cicero was highly articulate and polished when he used the same tactic, your posts certainly are not. Cicero would also have got himself out of the pickle you made in the final set tie breaker thread too.

Do you mind pointing out where that good use of logic is in the thread I posted earlier? He can't even use the data correctly to support his own conclusions, talk about idiocy!
It's clear from your other threads that you've set up that you've allowed your Nadal fanaticism to cloud your judgement because threads you claim are there to evaluate the greatness of Federer are thinly veiled attacks upon Federer. I think you need to re-evaluate your approach on this forum if this is what your intending on doing. Stirring up and antagonizing Federer fans makes little sense to me, you won't drive us away through such an approach!

I like to think I have a cordial relationship with S_A and will even admit to a certain fondness of him, but even he admits to just showing up every now and then to have a bit of fun bashing Fed and hoping to wind up Fed fans. And he does it quite well - he plays it with an admirably straight face, but even he doesn't take himself too seriously.
I'm hoping amritia's comment also isn't meant as a serious compliment. S_A doesn't even try to be logical most of the time.

SA, clearly you need to brush up on your English, as we know it's not your first language (as you said). I'm very calm thanks SA, it's immensely amusing you're back to embarrass yourself, as I understand you did with Dr Zeus recently? Ah, some things stay the same!
I'm not going to go over a thread in which you humiliated yourself so badly, not a single person came to your aid and that includes lydian. You asserted the stats from the ATP website was for 5th set tie breakers, they are not. They are for the deciding set (nothing to do exclusively with tie breakers as you alleged at all). Read back, maybe you might come to your senses and realise how foolish you appear on that thread!

Q - What makes Federer so great?
A - Haters like u, a person is more popular when he gets either love or hatred. People hate somebody coz they are jealous of his achivements, in Federer's case there are some wums who cannot tolerate his success and they spend day in day out trying to defame hime, but what they dont realize is they make him more popular and make fans feel he is the greatest player.
So What makes Federer great?
Its the WUMs who make him great.

Yeah, it was hilarious wasn't it? If I recall correctly, he did the same thing he tried with Dr "Zeus" and desperately maintained he meant something else for a while.
The really great bit was when the penny dropped that to meet his statistic some players had to have won a massive amount of matches on a final set tie break and he'd completely overlooked the relative srarity of the event itself.
It was extremely funny.
