Premiership in World Cup Years
2003/4
Bath topped the table with 79pts - 6 ahead of Wasps - but lost to Wasps in their only play-off match - the final.
Bath secured 9 wins from 10 during the World Cup, including a win at Welford Rd.
At half-way Bath topped the table with 43pts.
2007/8
Gloucester topped the table with 74pts - 4 ahead of Wasps - but lost to Tigers in the playoff semi-final.
Gloucester secured 5 wins from 6 during World Cup, including a win at Welford Rd.
At half-way Gloucester had 41 points and led the table.
2011/12
Quins secured a 100% 6 wins during the World Cup, including a win at Welford Rd
At half-way Quins led the table with 43pts.
Amazing how many similarities there are. Quins will be hoping come the end of May that unlike Bath and Gloucester they have managed to win the competition.

Re: Premiership in World Cup Years
PS I really doubt that Wasps can do the hat-trick of Titles in WC years.

Re: Premiership in World Cup Years
Good post, mate.
Great observation about the clubs which do well during the RWC and the final playoff winners. Makes perfect sense when I read your post.
I think this season we have a team, Saracens, which were built exactly to withstand the RWC player losses. They have been playing their very successful brand of conservative, physical Rugby, and to me, look like the best team at the moment. Yes, Quins have been terrific, the win against Toulouse magnificent. But I think they look a tired bunch right now and could easily fall from the top spot.

Re: Premiership in World Cup Years
Quins and Saracens look like they would have suffered a lot less than usual front runners like Leicester, so not really a surprise.
Will be interesting to see how it fairs later in the comp.. Sarries are a good side they may well over take Quins soon, Quins can have some poor off days.
