Just started back in the gym after a long lay off.
You guys make me feel fat...well infact I am but that's not the point. Used to go to the gym every morning before work, used to work 12-8, but last year I moved to a 9-5 shift. Getting the motivation to go to the gym after work was so hard, and only just seriously started again before christmas. My idea weight is 180/190 however I'm 242
Going four days a week, so hopefully I'll be able to shift a fair bit of weight and get some muscle back by the summer for that beach body that my misses desperatly wants me to have haha

Hi Hampo
Ha, good luck. I work 9-5 too, and find what works best for me is going home after work and relaxing for a couple of hours, before going up to the gym about 7.30-8 when I feel much more up for it than immediately after work.
In terms of reducing your weight, a good mixture of cardio and weight training should do the trick soon enough, particularly if you're training 4 times per week and keeping your diet and alcohol consumption in check!
Let us know how you get on

Cheers Fists. The diet is pretty good, a mixture of grilled chicken breast, pasta and rice plus protein shakes seems to be working well at the moment.
The booze isn't an issue, been T total since my misses got pregnant 9 months ago and haven't missed it one bit so keeping that up should be easy enough.

Re: Just started back in the gym after a long lay off.
Congratulations on the news of the little one.
I try not to drink too much these days, either. I have completely cut it out in the week, and certainly don't miss that, and now just go out on one of the weekend nights (where I invariably get hammered, not intentionally may I add).
However, I have a week away skiing coming up, which will no doubt undo all the good work as I get trollied each day in the Apres Ski bar.
The diet seems good, and if you can balance it so that you have the carbs earlier in the day and the protein later in the day, that should help even more.

If youre looking to lose weight then pasta is one of the most calorie dense foods you can eat. Avoid... Stick to potatoes and brown rice. Remember, fats are essential to lose weight, eat peanut butter and/or nuts.
Do some research on dieting, it is the most important aspect of any training regime.

I always find that research is so contradictory though, Johnson. One place will say one thing, and another site will say another. Is there anywhere you find particularly reliable?
Can you expand on the fats helping to lose weight bit, I've heard that before but don't know the ins and outs of it all.
Cheers

^ Men's Health is the worst for contradicting itself. One day it says 'have a coffee before your workout to kick start your metabolism', and the next issue will say 'drop your daily coffee to avoid heart stress and lose 12lbs a year'.
Stupid.
Stupid.

Yeah men's health is shocking for such information, I find.
Re: Just started back in the gym after a long lay off.
Those health mags are a joke and should be treated as such. Basically just promotional space to peddle the latest supplements with 'research' paid for by the companies. The scientific consensus is that we need the right types of fat for a healthy diet. As for weight loss I think it's something to do with if we deprive our bodies of fat we will go into survival mode and hold onto the fat that we've got in order to survive. But if we eat fat our bodies will 'realise' that there is a plentiful supply and therefore not feel the need to retain the excess fat.
