Laura Robson's rainbow hairband
I saw some articles about how Laura was making a statement about gay equality by wearing a rainbow hairband and thought nothing of it.
Then I read that her match was in the Margaret Court Arena, named after the Evangalical Christian Pentecostal Minster and former tennis great who does a line in 'curing' homosexuals and recently described homosexuality as an abomination. Gay rights groups asked spectators at the Margaret Court arena to take rainbow flags &c to make a point - and Laura wore her rainbow hairband.
However, when questioned afterwards she affected to be somewhat vaguely aware of the circumstances and only making a generalised comment but not taking part in the protest - hence embroiling herself in a 'controversy' according to the Guardian and no doubt others.
It seems to me she was a little unwise, not because of the cause she was espousing, but because of her age, the context of needing to win a tough tennis match here and quite a lot in the near future, but being somewhat half-hearted about it.
All 17-yr-olds are entitled to a point of view, but if they want to promote it they had better doubly do their stuff and be ready to defend themselves and think about the consequences for them or not bother - the world has a particular joy in picking apart young would-be morality lecturers. To wear the hairband and profess only to have been vaguely aware of the Court controversy is the worst of all worlds - sucking herself into the media scrum but not getting to make the point and really looking rather flakey.
She must obviously know that there is a silly taboo about lesbianism in woman's tennis with lots of rumours and that coming out is usually a bad decision commercially. The water around that issue is pretty hot and toes should be dipped into it with forethought and usually by the committed. I hope she learns from this.

She's too young to have an opinion, anyway who can take her seriously when she never even made quarters of a slam yet?

She lives in the countryside, won't find a Tesco's for 20 miles.

Which slam quarter have you made in order for your opinions to be valid?

Yes, but I know what you mean. Unless a poster states their gender, there's no agenda to find out their gender.
(Look, Ma, I didn't say 'sex')
