Re: One Sided Matches Watch: AO 2012
What's interesting in those one sided matches is that they can happen because one player is very good, or very bad or injured. We need to know relative strength of the players as well as knowingthey were not physically impaired to validate the one sided score.
Kamke for instance was very impressive v Dolgo and he is probably one to watch in the future. His one sided first round score is probably down to his tennis.

Nore Staat what is your definition of a one sided match?
Federer vs. Beck was so "one sided" that it didn't even happen.

Re: One Sided Matches Watch: AO 2012
I specify the definition in parenthesis (seven games or less in that instance). As Tenez mentions there could be a number of reasons for the one sided nature of the match. Beck could have been injured or he could have been psyched out by his impending match up with Federer There tends to be more one sided matches in the womens game, especially when a Brit is playing . It will be interesting to see how things evolve during the tournament.newballs wrote:Nore Staat what is your definition of a one sided match?

I might change the definition as the tournament progresses so that it can be seen who is having the easier ride / playing the better tennis (?) at each stage.

Re: One Sided Matches Watch: AO 2012
There are more one-sided matches in the women's game because they don't generally have a big serve which can be a big leveller in the men's game.
A big difference in ability in a women's match is almost always shown in the scoreline. A similar level match in the men's game could go 6-3 6-4 6-3 quite easily, simply because of the service.

Good point. I suppose it's all to do with power to mass ratios. Homo sapiens are sexually dimorphic with the male being on average significantly bigger and stronger. I guess this translates into a different type of "sport". On a separate note the main thing that puts me off the womens game are the loud shrieks.

Re: One Sided Matches Watch: AO 2012
I'll try to balance things up with my definitions so that a similar lower proportion is captured - hence I have redefined the mens first round "one sidedness" definition slightly.

I want a one sided finals. It's been a long time since we had a slam final where one player walked out heads high having won a total of 4 games.

Day 4 matches added.
Note the following Round 2 matches
Federer Swi 3 bt Beck Ger w/o
Kohlschreiber Ger bt Riba Spa 6-0 4-0 Ret
Given that Federer had a walkover, the top 4 had "easy" second round matches, along with Berdych and Gasquet.
In the Ladies tournament, both Azarenka and Sharapova have dropped only two games in two rounds.

Re: One Sided Matches Watch: AO 2012
Updated for Day 6 (Completion of Round three)
For the ladies note the following round three retirements:
Li Chn 5 bt Medina Garrigues Spa 26 3-0 Ret
Kvitova Cze 2 bt Kirilenko Rus(27) 6-0 1-0 Ret
Comment:
Sharapova has dropped the fewest games so far (5 games in three matches). Having topped (along with Azarenka) the "leaders board" in rounds one and two, she has had to make way to Serena Williams and Jelena Jankovic in round three, who dropped one game less than Sharapova in this round.
Note that Azarenka dropped off the board having had the more difficult challenge of Mona Barthel (Ger unseeded), who has recently jumped about 20 ranking positions after her breakthrough WTA win last week at the Moorila Hobart International (where she won 8 matches in 9 days). However Azarenka still only dropped 6 games in winning 6-2 6-4
Some housekeeping: the following matches involving retirements have been dropped from this board:
first round: Barthel Ger bt Keothavong GB 6-0 Ret
2nd round: Goerges Ger 22 bt Daniilidou Gre 6-2 2-0 Ret
For the ladies note the following round three retirements:
Li Chn 5 bt Medina Garrigues Spa 26 3-0 Ret
Kvitova Cze 2 bt Kirilenko Rus(27) 6-0 1-0 Ret

Gasquet's domination of Tipsarevic was surprising, was Tipsy injured?

Comment on the Men (after Round Three):
Djokovic has topped the board every round so far, dropping the fewest games so far (10 games in three matches). Note that Nadal is the only other player to have appeared on the board in all three rounds. Special mention must be given to Murray and "Reechard" Gasquet who have appeared on the board in the past two rounds.

If that were the case then that would be the second consecutive round that Gasquet has faced an "injured" player - well at least Golubev retired in the third set (in his second round match with Gasquet).

Gasquet is 1 of the most boring players ever, Tipsy should be ashamed.

Re: One Sided Matches Watch: AO 2012
There is so far no indication that Tipsarevic was "injured". Reports suggest that Tipsarevic was surprised by Gasquets aggressive, attacking play, and lost complete tempo - becoming "out of sorts":

Gasquet has now played Tipsarevic three times, and has won all three matches without dropping a set. However the other two matches were in 2003 and 2005

Re: One Sided Matches Watch: AO 2012
Updated for end of round four. Djokovic dropped his first set of the tournament against Hewitt and drops off the board for the first time. Murray had the most impressive win of the round, but this may have been partly down to the opposition . Tsonga was knocked out this round by the 22 year old Kei Nishikori.
Serena Williams and Jelena Jankovic, who both had the easiest wins of the third round, were both knocked out in the fourth round winning only five games each.
