Six Nations: Dan Lydiate injury worry for Wales
Dan Lydiate is confident of being fit for Wales' Six Nations challenge after giving Wales an injury worry.
The Newport Gwent Dragons flanker was helped off with an ankle injury in the opening quarter of their Amlin Challenge Cup clash against Cavalieri Prato on Saturday.
But when asked if he would be fit ahead of the tournament, he told BBC Sport Wales: "I hope so."
Lydiate is among 35 players named for a pre-tournament training camp in Poland.
The 24-year-old, who has been capped 20 times, is among seven back-row forwards in the squad

BBC Radio said he is out with hamstring problem?

Important player for Wales. Hope he's ok.
Bit of a contradiction in the Beeb article saying that Lydiate is "confident of being fit" and then when they actually quote him he says "I hope so".
Not quite the same.

Then on the radio BBC said he is defiantly out it's all very confusing.

It will be a huge blow for us if he is out, they always say you don't realise how good a player is until he's not there.
Unfortunately this will be the case for us but if (and hope he is) he's not fit then people will finally realise how much unseen work he does and how much of the dirty on the ground work he does.
I guess R Jones would be natural replacment from within players selected and has been playing well but not in same league as Lydiate.
maybe he could call up Shingler as cover also.

Aaron Shingler would make a worthy addition

BL00DY Hell just watched the Scarlets match ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Shingler out-paced the Fijian fly-half Seremaia Bai in their race to the other end of the field something like 45 mtrs
One thing he has in abundance over Lydiate ,,,,,,,,,,,, thats blistering speed............ pretty vital to a blindside flanker

Ryan Jones carrying a calf (another one) strain as well so Shingler might get added as precaution.

Aaron Shingler 6 ft 6 in 17st very mobile lock would be useful but playing the ref is not one of his strongest qualities.

Re: Six Nations: Dan Lydiate injury worry for Wales
Shingler is a very mobile attack minded player and add a lot to Wales. However, it's a bit early for him to be dumped in. He has a nack for rubbing the ref up the wrong way nd every time he plays for the Scarlets you don't know if he's going to do something brilliant (yesterday) or continually risk a yellow. I was surprised he wasn't binned against the saints for his infringements (glad he wasn't obviously) but he doesn't seem to have a scooby doo what the refs looking for - as mentioned above.
Maybe add him to the squad and see but he could be a risk at international level right now.

He may be a risk but I would rather Gatland have the minerals to add Shingler if need be rather than take a backward step and call up Thomas.

Re: Six Nations: Dan Lydiate injury worry for Wales
Of far more concern to Wales it the injury to Priestland. He was the only specialist 10 selected in the 35!
Hook is there but he proved in the World Cup that he is not a 10 and he continues to add to that convincing argument as he sruggles in a poorly performing Perpignan side. Oh yes, there is Henson, but he in not playing well enough to make the Blues match day 22!
Jones (still getting picked ahead of Preistland at the Scarlets) and Tovey should be called up pronto.

It was more than 45m - It was the length of the field almost.

Shingler or Lewis at the Dragons should be called up to the welsh squad if Lydiate doesnt recover.
Concerning injuries to Jenkins and Priestland as well.

Dan has tweeted he is back to his two hourly ice pack routine so Im hopeful on him. Wouldnt be suprised if he called up Lewis Evans. Calling up Shingler would probably just heap more embarressment on his little brother though. We could still end up with Shinglers playing against each other in Cardiff this year.

I wouldn't say a blindside has to have blistering pace really. I would be happy enough having a six like Lydiate and a mobile 7.

Lewis Evans was in the squad for the on off against Australia after the WC and has played all across the back row for us.
Both are on very good form for their respective Regions but I hope it doesn't come to that and Dan comes through ok

Re: Six Nations: Dan Lydiate injury worry for Wales
PRESS RELEASE FROM WELSH RUGBY UNION:
Wales’ RBS 6 Nations training squad will be just one player short of their full contingency tonight (Monday) after gathering for duty in Gdansk, Poland ready for a week of intense training ahead of their opening clash with Ireland a week on Sunday.
Prop Gethin Jenkins is the only absentee from the 35-man squad announced last week - he remains at home in Wales due to a knee injury he picked up during the Blues' victorious Heineken Cup clash with Racing Metro on Sunday - but it is hoped he will travel to the Cetniewo Camp in Gdansk to meet up with his international colleagues before the week is out.
Training begins in earnest tomorrow (Tuesday), with Monday used primarily as a travel and recovery day, although it did include the cryotherapy sessions which are being utilised by Wales at the Olympic sports village to aid the recovery process, both from injury and training.
Scarlets fly-half Rhys Priestland (knee) and Dragons back row Dan Lydiate (ankle) both also left the pitch during their respective European matches this weekend, but both players will train in Poland whilst managing their injuries.
Blues centre Jamie Roberts (knee) is progressing well, he will also continue his rehabilitation on Eastern European soil.
Clermont full-back Lee Byrne, who left the field of play with a problem with his thumb at the weekend, has sustained no lasting damage and he is able to take a full part in what will be a tough week this week.

If all bar Jenkins (and he's going later) are fit enough to train in Poland then surely that's a promising sign?! Read that Roberts is recovering well and also that Priestland is walking around pretty much fine by himself.

My ankle and foot is still knackered after falling over Christmas Eve, I may plan a trip to Poland instead of Portugal
