Re: England ODI squad
kieswetter's record as an opener isn't very good tbh and hes lucky to even keep his spot but just be dropped down the order imo
as much as it depresses me to say this i think bopara will play in front of buttler

Not great but deserving of another series in my opinion. I see no point in chopping and changing too much but never finding the solution. Down the order, however, I see little value in him - I would rather have Bopara at 5 and Buttler take the gloves.
I think Buttler will play. He was injured for the warm-up match but I think he's recovered now and England will be desperate to give him a chance.

Re: England ODI squad
i hope buttler will play , i have been hoping they would have given him a chance long before now but i doubt they will be happy going in with patel as the 5th bowler and only having KP and trott to back him up
going in without a second "all-rounder" will be too much of a risk for them , i hope i am wrong tho
on kieswetter, i dont think hes anywhere near good enough to open in international cricket especially now we have a new ball from both ends. personally i would replace him with buttler behind the stumps as it gives more flexibility rather than having buttler play as a specialist batsman.
kieswetter has played 28 ODIs now, he still averages below 30, hes made one hundred which was against bangladesh, he was dropped 3 times before he got to 20 in that innings as well iirc, and of the 5 50s hes made one of them was against scotland. thats nowhere near good enough for an opener.

Re: England ODI squad
Buttler was injured for the warm up, had he not been he may have had a chance to press a claim. Without that, I just dont see him getting picked...especially since it would leave England desperately short of bowling.
His best chance to get in the side is as a direct replacement for Keiswetter. Now he isnt opening that would be a lot easier to facilitate, but wont happen immediately.

Not desperately short... I think England would be content with Broad, Finn, Bresnan, Swann bowling 10 and Patel also unless he gets clobbered. KP and Trott can make up any overs after that.

Why include Briggs in the squad if you dont play him?

Experience of touring in a senior environment around the senior players, injury cover, to fill in if Patel has a shocker in the early matches, if England play on a 'dust bowl' and want three spinners (unlikely in my view).

I think they will go with 1 Cook (c) 2 Pietersen 3 Trott 4 Morgan 5 Kieswetter (wk) 6 Buttler 7 Patel 8 Bresnan 9 Swann 10 Broad 11 Finn
My choice would be 1 Cook (c) 2 Kieswetter (wk) 3 Pietersen 4 Trott 5 Morgan 6 Buttler 7 Patel 8 Bresnan 9 Broad 10 Swann 11 Anderson
Yes Shelsey93 I would also go with your team.

Re: England ODI squad
Not sure if there is anyone in the Young Lions side that have made a case for consideration in the senior squad, apart from perhaps James Taylor and Chris Woakes.

Re: England ODI squad
i really hope that Buttler gets the nod if fit, and hopefully take the gloves.....better batsman than kieswetter IMO, and many county players say that he is a much better gloveman as well.

Re: England ODI squad
Crucial that we have bresnan in for the ODI'S, especially in these conditions, he is very good with reverse swing.

with a new ball from each end then we wont see as much reverse swing tho
even at the end of the innings the ball is only going to be 25 overs old

Re: England ODI squad
rich in most series been played since that rule came in, the ball has still been reversing after around 15 overs.

Re: England ODI squad
depends on conditions tho
we didn't see alot of reverse swing in the tests in the UAE even when the ball was getting close to 80 overs old
saying that alot of the innings didn't last long enough for the ball to get old enough to reverse

Re: England ODI squad
Bresnan will probably be first change during this series as Finn looked a lot more dangerous in India. I suspect Finn will start with a long spell leaving Broad and Bresnan to bowl the batting powerplay and then finish off the innings.
Pity that Buttler's been ruled out. Huge talent who has to be given a go once fit.

hopefully the crowds for this series, will be a bit bigger than they were for the test series!!

Re: England ODI squad
I think we'll see Bresnan opening the bowling with Finn. Broad likes to bowl first change, especially in ODI's.
As for the reverse swing debate, different balls, different rules isnt it. Under the old system of one ball for 30 odd overs, it was quite common to see reverse swing in the subcontinent from 15-20 ovs into the innings. So by simple maths i reckon you'll see it reverse for the last 15-20 overs in this series.
Shame that Jos is injured, expect Bopara to play in his place and bat any of 4/5/6 depending on match situation. Fingers crossed for a better scoreline at the end of this series!

Re: England ODI squad
everyone keeps going on about this being sub-contintental conditions but if you watched the test series there was alot of grass on the outfield and fairly small squares which means the ball wont get roughed up as quickly so wont reverse as early
as i said earlier we didn't see alot of reverse swing at all during the test series even with a ball much older than we will see in the ODIs
