Re: Quick Question...
To be a pedant though Freddie Welsh was not actually his name, believe he was born Freddie Thomas, and he adopted the name Welsh as a gesture of patriotism. Good question though.

Re: Quick Question...
You'll be telling me next that Wales is not technically a nation, it is a principality, so wasn't really Welsh either, he was British.

Ha! That was going through my mind when I answered, Rowley - just didn't forsee even you being quite so pedantic, mind.
Although my understanding of how he got the name 'Freddie Welsh' is a little different; I read that a sloppy MC was responsible. In an amateur bout / very early professional one, the MC asked what his name was so he could introduce him, but due to crowd noise all he heard was "Freddie." So upon hearing the accent but not his surname, the MC simply cobbled together the name 'Freddie Welsh' and, hey ho, there you go.
Don't take it as gospel, though!

Re: Quick Question...
Very possible Chris to be honest can't quite remember how he came to be called Welsh so just made that bit up.

Re: Quick Question...
According to Wiki, before his first professional fight Welsh decided to change his name, fearing he may fail and that his mother would find out he was boxing. He first chose Fred Cymry, Cymry meaning Welsh, but on writing to Fanny, she suggested that 'Welsh' would be less confusing. It probably wasn't that at all.

Re: Quick Question...
How many additional seconds did Dundee's famed glove ripping buy Ali when fighting Cooper. No cheating.

Well, I've heard two seconds, three seconds and six seconds thrown about in equal amounts - so I'll got for the middle one, three seconds, as a guess.
To be honest, I'm more inclined to believe Cooper's account of things; it was at least five minutes.

Re: Quick Question...
The aticle on bbc was riddled with inaccuracies/exaggerations so Im not sure how reliable it is. It tells the story of Dundee ordering the ropes loosened in Zaire. He actually wanted them tightened.

A BBC article that is riddled with inaccuracies?
Surely not. That whole corporation is one giant inaccuracy.

Re: Quick Question...
Yeah the BBC is hopeless for boxing. The general theme seems to be Ben Dirs bemoaning the current state of boxing while wistfully reminiscing about a time when he neither followed nor covered the sport.
