Scotland vs France player rating
A frustrating afternoon, some great performances and some mistakles...
Scotland : 15-Stuart Hogg, - 9 Great try, breaking the line with ease and overall a fantastic performance - my MOM
14-Rory Lamont, - 5 - injured before could make a big impact. Has no fear
13-Sean Lamont, - 6 - played ok, but did not set the world alight - better on the wing
12-Graeme Morrison, - 6.5 - made a few breaks, and played better than has done for a while - stayed his dropping for now
11-Lee Jones, - 7 - livley when got the ball. Big missed tackled cost us. Did not see enough of the ball for my liking
10-Greig Laidlaw, - 6 another big missed tackle - quite lively and worth staying with
9-Mike Blair; - 9 back to his best, now need the team to realise that and folow him. Best 9 of the 6 nations be a country mile this week - shame he got injured
1-Allan Jacobsen, - 3 - spends too much time looking at the ref pointing at supposed infraction - part of a front row destroyed
2-Ross Ford (captain), - 8 perfect throwing record all 6 nations. Great carries - best Hokker in the 6 nations just now - would have got 9 but forscrum time
3-Geoff Cross, - 3 porr in scrum, did not do enough in the loose
4-Richie Gray, - 6 Quieter game, but still good - some half breaks and a menace in the line out
5-Jim Hamilton, - 7 even beeter in the line out and carried a lot - made tackles left and right
6-John Barclay, - 7 out of position, but did well. Great steal for out second try
7-Ross Rennie, - 9 TV's man of the match and deserved - ripped the ball Twice and is pushing Warbelton*sp for the 7 in the lions at the moment
8-David Denton. - 7 lots of carries, slightly less effective than in other games, but still a good performance
Replacements:
16-Scott Lawson (for Ford, 69), - 6 Not much impact, but did the basics well
17-Ed Kalman (for Cross, 62), - 4 not sure added anything
18-Alastair Kellock (for Hamilton, 69) - 5 lost the ball in contact, did not have much of an impact
19-Richie Vernon (for Denton, 53), - 7 played well and put his hand up for re-selection - a good game
20-Chris Cusiter (for Blair, 30), - 7 played ok, still takes too many steps, but not as slow as he has been. Not as good a blair
21-Duncan Weir (for Laidlaw, 49), - 6 industriuos, but nothing more. First start, so lots of time to delvelop -should be on bench again
22-Nick De Luca (for R Lamont, 30). - 8 ok I saw something of what he could be. Great timmed passes for the try, and fsat feet - keep up THIS good work
AR - 6 - while some of the changes were forced, the back row actually worked. Injury meant we had a better back line when S lamont went to wing.

Re: Scotland vs France player rating
I honestly don't think Laidlaw is an international 10 yet., and defensively that was a very poor tackle he missed.
Blair had a good game at 9.

Agreed hence the 6 for Laidlaw - worth sticking with him and Weir though and let them develop

Laidlawis the best 10 scotland have had for a long long time. Weir may be better. Its not like we have much choice other then them.

That's not true. Bring Parks or Paterson out of retirement? Fight the Steven Shingler case better? Sean Lamont has played virtually everywhere else with little justification, give him a try?

The Shingler case is being heard by the IRB committee today, I believe

Re: Scotland vs France player rating
Risky, similar ratings to yourself, with just a couple of minor changes:
15 Stuart Hogg - 8 Great try, breaking the line with ease and overall a fantastic performance, spilled the ball a couple of times in attack - my MOTM
14 Rory Lamont, - 4 Injured before could make a big impact, not a winger
13 Sean Lamont - 6 Shot out of the defensive line for Fofana's try, would have been better holding back, much better on the wing
12 Graeme Morrison - 5 Made a few breaks, and played better than has done for a while - still needs to be replaced by a distributing 12
11 Lee Jones - 7 Lively when got the ball, has looked the business (not sure which 'big missed tackle'? If you mean the Medard one, I thought that was SLamont?)
10 Greig Laidlaw - 6 Another big missed tackle, quite lively and worth staying with, for me is a 9 playing at 10, and if Weir is ready, let's have Laidlaw at SH
9-Mike Blair - 7 Looked back to his best, but marked down for only surviving a half
1 Allan Jacobsen - 3 Not Chunk's best display
2 Ross Ford (captain) - 8 Perfect throwing record all 6 nations, made significant yards with ball in hand, tackled, but part of a front row that was detroyed
3 Geoff Cross - 3 Poor in scrum, did not do enough in the loose
4 Richie Gray - 6 Quieter game, but still good - some half breaks and a menace in the line out
5 Jim Hamilton - 7 Strong game from the big man
6 John Barclay - 7 Out of position, but did well. Great steal for out second try, but would still prefer to see a chopper there to start
7 Ross Rennie - 8 TV's man of the match and deserved - ripped the ball twice and is pushing Warburton for the 7 in the Lions at the moment
8 David Denton - 7 Lots of carries, slightly less effective than in other games, but still a good performance
Replacements:
16 Scott Lawson (for Ford, 69) - 5 Not much impact, too small for an international hooker these days
17 Ed Kalman (for Cross, 62), - 3 Worse in the scrum if that was possible
18 Alastair Kellock (for Hamilton, 69) - 4 Lost the ball in contact, did not have much of an impact
19 Richie Vernon (for Denton, 53) - 6 played well and put his hand up for re-selection - a decent game
20 Chris Cusiter (for Blair, 30) - 6 Played ok, still takes too many steps, but not as slow as he has been
21 Duncan Weir (for Laidlaw, 49) - 6 Industrious, likely to be the future. First cap, so lots of time to develop - should be on bench again
22 Nick De Luca (for R Lamont, 30) - 7 Maximum score obtained for his time on the pitch, tackled, made breaks, distributed - best game in a Scotland shirt
15 Stuart Hogg - 8 Great try, breaking the line with ease and overall a fantastic performance, spilled the ball a couple of times in attack - my MOTM
14 Rory Lamont, - 4 Injured before could make a big impact, not a winger

Re: Scotland vs France player rating
Amazine that previously people have been dismissing Scotland's line out and line out jumpers - even saying that Gray is weak in the line out
100% record after 3 games - unheard of!

I will burn in hell for this, but.....
Morrison actually deserves better than a 5.
I thought he was quite good actually.

Re: Scotland vs France player rating
I thought Morrison was very very good but he is a good player for Scotland to win trophies they need a lot of very good players and some excellent players. Morrison is part of the Lamonts, Danielli, Southwell, Henderson, Dewey, Parks, Lawson, Ally Hogg, Macleod, Jacobsen and Scott Lawson group of players who aren't going to win regularly and don't have the tactical mindset to score many tries. However as far as yesterday goes I thought he played quite well

Re: Scotland vs France player rating
morrison was OK at best. Not poor, but not good.
De Luca was surprisingly good. Maybe he has finally gotten over his choking and this is him settled? or am I hoping for too much?
Blair way better than cusiter.
Laidlaw needs a tackling refresher.
Jones needs the same refresher. How folk can think he had a good game I do not know! His try was a run in and his missed tackle was woeful. Yes his pass to Hogg was good for the 1st try, but I could have gave that. Simple stuff.
Hogg was good.
Rennie was outstanding
Barclay was quiet (aside form his cheeky steal)
Lineout superior. Scrum a joke!
All we ened is to have a competative scrum and that maych would have been a win. And for god's sake, will someone show our backs how to run support lines for breaks!!!!
Right, I'm off to calm down again

Re: Scotland vs France player rating
Well after having watched the game on Sunday without the ability to comment on here due to being on a Sea Trial so forgive the late post!
I'll take back some of the things I said about some of AR's selections. Barclay did not look out of place at all t 6 and to be honest should be given a chance against Ireland. Ireland are a bigger and more physical backrow than France but are significantly less impressive at the dark arts of the breakdown. Barlcay and Rennie were utterly fantastic in the match against France. Glas I think said it best when describing Rennie as a walking infringement in an invisibility cloak
Rennie was I felt a stand out performer in that game and was simply awesome.
In terms of forward play what worried me most was the front row. Our Scrum was simply vapourised in the match and Allan Jacobsen did little else in the loose except give away stupid penalties at critical moments. Time to start looking for a replacement loosehead perhaps? Plenty of candidates out there too.
The line out was immense however. Gray, Barclay, Hamilton and Rennie stripping the ball away at mauls made the French pay dearly everytime they kicked for touch.
Onto the backs. What can I say about the first try? Laidlaw to Jones to Hogg.... all the new caps. Pay Attention Andy.
Morrison and Lamont did their jobs in the middle, made the most of their tackles and had some decent carries. Biggest worry for me is Laidlaw in defence, he tries his hardest but seem to struggle to make his tackles, one of his key missed tackles allowed Fofana through to score. Mike Blair looked fantastic too before leaving the field due to injury.
NDL, well glad he had a good game. In the past I have been one of the sole supporters of the man, and other Scottish posters have been right to think him a bit over rated. He had an absolute stormer for when he came on for Rory "Mr Glass" Lamont, smashing Rougerie twice and being the key link man for Jones' try.
Jones and Hogg showed why they were brought into the team. Critical finishing.
All in all Pretty happy with how we played and pretty surprised with how well the team Played. I still think Andy Robinson's selection of Morrison and Lamont was a mistake, but they played well.
Ireland next..... perhaps they'll be a little worried about us now that we have proven we know where the try line is!
