Gamboa expected to pull out of Rios bout!
It's been flying round the websites and it's highly expected Gamboa will pull out and not due to injury.
He skipped the press conference and instead done workout at Mayweather's gym!
One of the most anticipated fights of the year called off (if rumours correct), what a pain!
If it's true do you think Gamboa started to question the jump in weight to face a huge LW?

I thought it was too good to be true. Boxing is so disappointing these days. We talk more about the fights that don't get made rather than those that do.

Yea I heard this yesterday
Mayweather has been quoted saying he feels like either Gamboa or broner are there for him to effectively "pass the torch on". As we saw with donaire, top rank wont let him go without a fight.
Reports suggest mercito gesta, a very very talented lightweight may be drafted in and he could pull off an upset.

A black eye for the sport if it's true. I'm such a huge admirer of Gamboa, but Christ Almighty, I do wish he'd get a move on with his career. Can't fathom out why, unless he has a legitimate injury (which looks unlikely) he's decided to pull out so soon after signing.

Apparently he didn't even sign the contract...

Granted not exactly the most reliable source...

If he moves to mayweather, his contract at top rank will be gone and we all know that arum will want 2 top rank boxers fighting

Stick Kevin Mitchell in there instead... Apparently he would smash Rios to pieces.

Re: Gamboa vs Rios Fight - OFF
Top Rank have just updated facebook about the fight saying that it might be taking place at Staple Centre.
No mention of this fight not happening.
Think we are jumping the gun a little.

Rios has said he never signed to the fight and hasn't had any say in the negotiations at all. Looks like Top Rank were trying to stitch him up.

Re: Gamboa vs Rios Fight - OFF
To be honest wouldn't really blame him. Gamboa is coming up from Featherweight jumping two weight classes and going in against an absolute monster of a Lightweight who couldn't even make weight in his last fight. Rios would probably be nearing the Welterweight limit by the time they get in the ring.
As much as I wanna see this fight happen. If I was Gamboa I wouldnt really be wanting to put my undefeated record and huge earning potential on the line with such a high risk of being beat by size alone.
Reckon he would be better picking up a belt at SF, before gradually making his way up to LW. Lets be honest fighting Rios is pretty much like jumping 3 weights instead of 2.

Gamboa vs Rios Fight - OFF
Gamboa has come out stating that the fight is indeed OFF and that a contract was never signed.
He has als stated that the fight WILL HAPPEN, however, it will be when his contract has been sorted with his promotions company.
Gamboa was recorded speaking at the Mayweathers Las Vegas Gym.
There are numerous reports on this within the past hour on BoxRec, East Side, Boxingscene, News Now.

Re: Gamboa vs Rios Fight - OFF
I don't get this whole two weight class thing, he's jumping up one genuine division which is a huge 9lbs, that's right a whole 9lbs, hardly a massive difference for a talented fighter like Gamboa.

Re: Gamboa vs Rios Fight - OFF
After wrapping Gambo in cotton wool, top rank were willing to through him to the wolves against Rios.
Serves Bobby right, Although I was picking Gambo to win, If I was Gambo, I'd prob fancy testing the weight, rather than jumping a couple of weights going in with the huge Rios.

In the lower weights, 9lbs is huge. Factor in Rios re-hydrating to 147 or so, then you have a massive advantage in which skill probably cant overcome.

Re: Gamboa vs Rios Fight - OFF
The heaviest Rios has ever entered the ring is 146.5lbs while Gamboa routinely enters the ring around the 140lb mark, the actual fight night weight difference isn't that huge.

Didn't realise Gamboa was that big. Still, the weight difference is significant.

I'm pretty sure that Rios was 152lbs vs Peterson and 150 vs Acosta. Gamboa is a big FW but at 5"6 he can't afford to bulk up his frame which already looks as big as possible without losing speed. If he comes in higher than 140 I would be surprised whereas rios will come in at 150 probably. 10 lbs is a huge amount to overcome, not its because of his shots carrying more power but that his body will be big enough to absorb gamboa's punches

Re: Gamboa vs Rios Fight - OFF
As dissapointed as i am, probably a smart move from Gamboa, moving up 2 weight division to face a huge and dangerous lightweight is maybe abit too risky this early in Gamboas career.

Re: Gamboa vs Rios Fight - OFF
Depends whether Gamboa intended to make the move to lightweight permenantly or not. It can be tricky to predict the consequences and results of weight jumping but if Gamboa had intended to grow into the weight rather than just jump up and then back down then I dont think it would have been too much of an issue.
To be honest I think Gamboa has missed a trick here as I think Rios is struggling to hit that lightweight limit. Im not sure Rios will be at lightweight much longer s there are decent fights above him to look for and the extra few pounds would help him out. So if the fight is going to happen you would think its a case of now or never.
Rios/Maidana would be a great scrap at 140.

I think Rios takes him out early if i'm honest Manos, Maidana looks vulnerable to the body and there's no better body puncher around that weight than Rios but would be fun while it lasts.

Taking a leaf out of haye and chisora's book, looks like this guy could be a temporary opponent, I don't really know who he is, he's called Richard Abril and he beat Acosta recently

Interesting interview with Bam-Bam re Gamboa.
Says a) he wants the fight, was moving to 140 but agreed to one last fight at 135 if it was Gamboa; and b) places some of the blame with PBF and Gamboa's association with him.
