Which court was faster?
Official 2012: Federer Champion of Dubai (bt Murray in final)
Last week the surface of the outdoor hardcourt tournament in Dubai caught the headlines in the tennis world.
The topic of discussion, as you may know, has been based on the fast pace in the Dubai surface. Many people loved the fast pace of the play, others felt the fast play and quick service games was not to their taste, while some welcomed more variety.
The first thing that sprung to my mind however was how the pace of Dubai compared to other years. It has been widely established that compared to the other surfaces currently it has been a fast surface.
But what about Dubai 2012 compared to Dubai 2006 for example?
I have asked this in another forum and the majority response I have received is that the surface of Dubai 2006 was marginally faster, but only just.
I would love to get your feedback on this- which court surface was faster? When I do get onto my computer hopefully I would be able to post YouTube links from the Dubai 2006 semifinal between federer and youzhny and the semifinal between Fed and Del Potro this year.
Thanks

Re: Which court was faster?
I cant answer that question. Sometimes people look at the number of TBs in a whole event to gauge how much the serve is helping the getting to TBs, i.e. the more TBs the faster the surface but its only a relative rule of thumb and players vary from year to year. However, this analysis has been surprisingly accurate in the past. So if anyone knew the stats for #TBs from 06,07,08,09, etc...that might be useful to see.

Interesting Lydian.
I watched Federer vs Youzhny, the 2006 semi and the surface seems faster than this year, even though there weren't tiebreaks.

Amrit there is no point in arguing how good is Nadal to Nadal haters, I am no Nadal fan, but do like him like any other ATP player, and I say this his accomplishment in Tennis and what he brought to the game deserves a lot of respect. I dont like his style but I play the ditto style in Table Tennis, so to have mastered the art of retrival in an high energy consuming sport is close to unbelievable.
Slow courts favour Nadal, but he has proved enough he can command respect in fast courts too, same thing applies for Federer in slow courts. Both are legends of the game and both deserves repect from mutual fans.

Re: Which court was faster?
The whole courts of 2006 v 2012 debate is soley aimed at the 2 major players that have achieved success in this time frame. I think a better debate would be the courts of the 1970's v 1980's because we can look at how drastically they have evolved after that period.

The choice of 2006 is interesting. Any one wants to guess the finalists and the result?

I think 2002 was faster than 2006.

Re: Which court was faster?
At least you should be a bit more consistent. Compare the 'same two players'.
Just because they are Semifinals does not mean they are similar.
(Also notice how windy it is in the 2006 F vs Y match).
Del Potro is a 'slower' player.

Re: Which court was faster?
Well I just posted links to 2 semis in the respective years. I thought both Del Potro and Youzhny are relatively attacking players, no need to attack me. And I can't remember you saying the same thing to Tenez when he compared Djokovic- Nadal and Federer- Blake, at least try to be consistent.
And I hadn't even compared the links yet, they were just highlights.

You consider comment made on your threads an attack on you? No wonder you 'defend'.

A 5:53 match vs 2:45 match.

You posted links without watching them first.

Re: Which court was faster?
Bogbrush why do you bother posting on my threads if its nothing to do with my topic.
Of course you have completely twisted my words, but thats irrelevant.
Do you have any contributions to which court was faster?

No, because the analysis is superficial and meaningless.amritia3ee wrote:Bogbrush why do you bother posting on my threads if its nothing to do with my topic.

And I mentioned your previous analysis - that attempted to prove that a players successful participation in doubles proved he was fit for world class singles - as further evidence of the hopelessness of your analysis.

And you're completely twisting my words again Bogbrush, you know I never said that.

Re: Which court was faster?
Yes, you spent half a day insisting that Federer was obviously fully fit in 2008 because he won the Olympics doubles. Eventually you admitted you were wrong after I spent some time expaining the different physical demands of these two very iffernt activities. Now you're trying to deny the event.
Not honourable.

The great thing about most posters here is that they stick with their words. It's fundamental to credibility. You don't.
The forum knows you well, they'll know whose telling the truth here.

I'm telling the truth here.
Now stop posting off-topic. You've made 5 (with one deleted) posts either attacking me or about something completely off-topic. Why don't you post contribute something that answers the question in the article?
If you want to randomly personally insult me then please PM me instead of practically spamming my thread.

Re: Which court was faster?
I have to say, I remember watching the tournament in 2006, and while they were fast tennis surfaces then, I think this past weekend was a whole different story.
