My views on why I don't think Harry Redknapp is the right man for the England job - any comments are welcomed Smile

The cries across England have been for Harry Redknapp to save us from our Anglo-Italian age and bring about an era of English dominance. But is he the right man for the job?

In my opinion – no.

My doubts are not based upon Redknapp’s ability: I believe Redknapp has a great knowledge of the game, is a very shrewd dealer in the transfer market, and can get a team to play to more than the sum of its parts. He’s improved every side he has ever been at – with perhaps an exception being Southampton – and he has rightly earned a reputation as a great British manager.

My problem is that he is not actually a winner. When Fabio Capello began his ill-fated attempt at international management, he was described as a “winner with a capital W”. Of note, Redknapp has won an FA Cup with Portsmouth in 2008. Prior to that, he had won a Football League Trophy and Division Three (Bournemouth), an Intertoto Cup (West Ham), and Division One (Portsmouth). Even counting these, for a man who has been in management for almost 30 years, five trophies is not an impressive haul. Although he undoubtedly improved these sides, I am confident in saying England fans will not be satisfied with seeing improvement, because we weren’t with Capello.

The fans only respect success, they would turn on him in a heartbeat if he didn't bring that.

I'm not doubting he's a top manager - I really do rate Redknapp. But I think Dass has summed it up very nicely that most England fans would turn on 'Arry as soon as success doesn't come - which I don't think it would, be it due to his managerial ability or, most likely, the players' not being as good as Spain and Germany.

As fans, the English (myself included) are very short-sighted for the most part, and I don't think we'd be happy with gradual improvement.

I believe 'Arry is the not the answer for a different reason: we don't have the players to win a major international tournament.

We need to have quality players in each of the team positions, we need to have quality back up in case of injury, we need to have players that are fit during the tournament, we need to have players that can play as a team and we need to have players that play with pride.

I like Harry, but he would of chose the old guard who have shown time and time again that they cannot cut it at international level without the foreign imports surrounding them, like back at their clubs.
Lampard and Gerrard cannot play together.
Terry is a liability, natural leader blah blah blah.
Ferdinand is to slow and gets demoralised too easily.
Let the younger lads go out and get the experience ready for WC 2014.

I agree Harry's not the answer but if I was the F.A I would have given Harry the job anyway for two reasons:-

#1:- If Harry failed you couldn't blame the F.A as the Fans, Media etc all wanted him.

#2:- If you choose someone else and they fail everyone will turn on the F.A saying why the hell didn't you get Harry like the whole country told you to do.

Agree with all the above. I would also add that, even if we did have the players, we would also need a manager who could assemble them into an effective team, not ask players to play out of position and pick lineups and tactics to beat the opposition, rather than try to cram all the supposed "star" players into the same starting eleven, regardless of whether they form a good team or not.
