Six Nations 2012: £2million payday awaits Wales if they can clinch the Grand Slam with win against France
According to The Telegraph
The Wales squad will received a combined pay-out of more than £2 million from the Welsh Rugby Union if they complete the Grand Slam by defeating France at the Millennium Stadium on Saturday.
The Telegraph understands that every member of the 22-man squad who has been involved in the all five Six Nations Championship matches will receive a total payment of £92,000, including win bonuses, for participating if Warren Gatland’s team secure their second Grand Slam in four years.

That kind of story should come out after the 6N - which might help on the illusion that players don't need money incentives to play with fire in their belly.
I'm sure they don't anyway, but it's a killjoy story in ways. "Yeah, yeah, there's a Six Nations game on at the weekend, but let's talk business"

It's come out in the English press not the Welsh.

Yeah I know. I'm not shooting bullets at the Welsh or the English. And it's nice money...just a little crass that it appears before the game, as the game itself is advertised as the incentive, both for us as viewers and the players as participants.

Chris Cairns is available if you need someone to have a word with the French. I hear he's up that way...

Well the Telegraph never want to keep a secret no matter whether they are dumping on their own doorstep or not.
They were the rag that released the Nike t-shirt-gate story last year on the Sunday England were celebrating their 2011 championship win.

The Wales squad will received a combined pay-out???
£2m payday from the WRFU????
The commercial benefits to the WRFU?? AGAIN???
beaten England, Scotland and Ireland on the road? Really???
Also the big bad Wales get 92k per player for a slam that totals 2 million, yet the English sum comes to a lowly 250k bonus despite them getting 72k each? England will only play 3.5 players???
That is the laziest written peice of crap I have ever read!!!

I think the telegraph is generally considered more high brow than the western mail in most parts.

According to this and the link the 72k (each) is for the championship and 2.35M (for the squad) for the Grand Slam.

Who, or what, is the WRFU ? Didn't realise I'd travelled up to Edinburgh to watch the Scotland game

It is pretty badly done. But must be true because it's in the paper

I think the french team are on a sack of truffles per man to win, if they clinch the runners up spot I believe PSA will throw a few snails in as well (just like he did last week )

£92,000 per player
You think that would be enough to keep them in Wales if it was given to the regions instead :/
Perhaps there should be a win bonus for the regions - after all, its their player - £46,000 each...

The higher up the table you finish the more money you get, I'm sure this money will be covered by the bonus money we'd get for finishing first. No doubt the commerical bonuses the WRU would recieve would dwarf this £2m. Bloody hell the 2012 Grand slam DVD set will be the must buy for all dads this christmas from their wife and kids!
I got two 2008 ones from family members, everyone buys them because we all like rugby and it's a safe bet! You can imagine how much the WRU get from that, not to mention the jersey sales!

This could be thing to urge the players to go out and win, it could also urge them to try and play to hard and concede penalties and lose.
I do agree with secretfly, this kind of story should of been kept quiet untill the tournament is over.

If you really think about it. what is the problem. it just highlights how much other sportsmen earn. the players deserve more in all probability yet would still put on the same performance bonus or not. this is not an amatuer game any more.

There will be a lot of money made from from merchandise if we win, of course there will. As long as we wait until after the game before the gs shirts and dvds are made.
We'd look really stupid otherwise if we lose, saying that, noone would really be that daft or arrogant these days would they?

From Gatlands comments regarding the adverts and so on post match it sounded as though someone had asked Wales if they would oblidge in making something and he had refused access to players.
A very sensible step after the Nike "when we win in Dublin on Saturday" leak and advert.
Everyone in Wales is still saying if and I don't think, even if we are fortunate enough to be the better team and beat France on Saturday, that we will realise what this wonderfully talented team have achieved until Monday morning at the earliest.
