You never know though. 1 away now and in the balls.
Jones and Carter are in the middle of a horrific opening frame.

I didn't see a lot of the match (2nd session +) but from the parts that I did see Day kept getting in and through a combination of bad luck and poor positional play couldn't make any frame winning breaks.

Re: Who will win this years World Championship ?
He scored well but constantly lost the cue ball and made bad decisions. Instead of playing safety after loosing the cue ball he tried to force the shots and let Stevens in so many times. It was frustrating.

Re: Who will win this years World Championship ?
Ryan Day has no safety game I've decided. When he's had to get snookers to stay in the frame from what I've seen he's never managed to get one. Top 16 player yes but not Top 8 anymore I'm afraid.

Jamie Jones has a swagger around the table when he's in full flow. It's a delight to watch.

well i know that john higgins only got a 147 very late into his carrer even didnt get one in practise.
obvioulsy he has beaten hendry and he has got a 147 - but had he at the point of him winning his first WC in 98!

And another brilliant by Jones again. Another century, this time a 132. Both total clearances. And here's the MSI.

1977 World Champion John Spencer.
Spencer made a 147 during the 1982 Lada Classic. Unfortunately the cameramen were on a tea break. The Nugget went on, later in that tournament, to make the first televised 147.
The correct answer is Terry Griffiths

Well Terry was never much of a heavy scorer. He was more of a grinder than a heavy breakbuilder like his Welsh colleague Doug Mountjoy.

Its just astonishing that he is the only player that has'nt made a 147 in practice, or at least the only honest one

It really isn't astonishing as such because Terry probably spent more time preparing for a match by practicing the art of safety play and learning about the usage of negative containing safety tactics in order to keep a match as long as possible so that it can go on well past the midnight hour.

Re: Who will win this years World Championship ?
Terry Grffiths was not always such a negative player though now was he.
You make it out as if he was a pot one red play safe kind of guy. Terry has many century breaks to his name and many 70+ breaks to his name.
Honestly, did you watch him much at all? His cue ball control was exceptional so i find it very astonishing that he has never got a 147 in practice.

Yes I did watch Terry Griffiths play a lot of his matches in the early 1980's when he was in his prime then and though he could score 70+ breaks he was better player when he grinded out wins like what Cliff Thorburn did in the 1983 WC, rather than by winning matches through making heavy breaks in every frame.

Snooker isn't all about heavy breaks in each and every frame though.

No its not TSC and i am not sure that he understands that.
I can accept that Terry didnt make a 147 in competition as not many do but in practice i cant think of any top player who has said that they havent made one in practice.

Re: Who will win this years World Championship ?
People who are old enough may well remember Terry's 2nd round encounter with Thorburn in 1983 that had the 147 and the 3.51 am finish but, for me, Griffiths' 1979 semi-final with Eddie Charlton was every bit as brutal and had to be seen to be believed ( but, of course, for all the wrong reasons ).

Yes I do understand that, as I have played the game a lot since the early 1980's and I have watched the game on TV keenly as well.

Re: Who will win this years World Championship ?
higgins openly admited well into his carrer that he never made a 147 in any circumstances- therefor i can certainly believe that terry griffiths hasnt. And the fact is he is the mundane type of player.... zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

I somehow doubt that now gboycottnut.
Cant wait for Robbo - Ronnie
That has the makings of a very close match and an absolute classic in it

Re: Who will win this years World Championship ?
I don't think John Higgins made a 147 either until shortly before or after he won his first World title in 1998.
I'm sure Dennis Taylor never made one unless he made one as an old man. In fact Mark Selby made more centuries last season than Taylor made in his entire career.

I still think Ro will win
The question was both about not making a 147 and never beating Stephen Hendry. I'm sure there are a lot of players who've done one but not the other.

I would not bank against this one going the distance but i doubt that it will be a late one.
Ronnie was averaging 18 sec per shot and Robbo 23. Thats not bad going

It's not shot time that counts though. If it was, Tony Drago would be a 20x World Champion.
