RIP Bert Sugar
Died of Lung Cancer
big loss to the sport.
The guy was a legend. A boxing encyclopedia who seemed to have been at ringside for every major fight.

So he did light that cigar!
Never liked him. I found him irritating but damn he sure could tell a story, loved boxing and will be sadly missed.
RIP Bert. Rest easy and smoke that Cohiba in peace.

I have to admit to being a fan.
Love watching the old shows on ESPN classic. The guy had stories about every great fight and fighter. The guy dedicated his life to boxing and i doubt there'll be another one like him.

RIP. One of the last of the throwback writers of the sport. His successors have very large boots to fill.
Whether a fan or not - Sugar still commanded respect - and that says a lot for his knowledge and ability.

Re: RIP Bert Sugar
Very, very sad news - what a character he was.
One of the saddest aspects, to me, is that society and the clean-cut media probably won't allow us to see his type again. I imagine that a boozy, flamboyantly-dressed writing rogue with a weakness for pretty young ladies and seldom seen without a cigar (even if it was never lit) would be deemed far too 'prehistoric', bawdy, risky and downright silly now by most TV executives.
Like all good historians and writers, he split opinion and generated debate, and with a sense of style, too. Love him or hate him (and I'm certainly in the first camp) there was no denying that when Bert talked, you listened. Such an engaing fella, and knew the sport inside out.
Rest In Peace.

Re: RIP Bert Sugar
I met Sugar in Vegas before the Hatton Mayweather fight and apart from being able to confirm he certainly does light those cigars he carries I can also confirm he was a genuinely nice guy, took the time to have a chat with us and was as friendly as you could ever have hoped, would be lying if I was to say there were occasions he has not annoyed me but always a tragedy to lose someone of knowledge and passion for the sport and Sugar had both of those things in spades.

Az, 'never liked him', he was 'a great guy'... interesting epitaph.
Let's hope cohiba don't go bust and further tragedy is avoided.
RIP Bert, this planet has too few characters, and has just lost another one.

A sad loss, immense knowledge and he had a story or two about virtually every fighter you could mention.
RIP BRS.

Sad news. Another face of boxing GONE. I liked Bert and his way of describing fights. You have to admit he did a lot to promote the history of boxing RIP Bert.

Never much cared for the guy If I'm honest...The George Burns persona with the cigar..his fondness for writing off the modern crop....
Still sorry he's gone and all that and best wishes to his family...

The guy could really write, and although some of his views were contentious and highly specualtive, what's wrong with that... I have quoted his pieces quite a lot over the last week. Boxing has lost one of it's all time great voices.
