Re: Miami Masters 2012 - Monday 26 March 2012 - OoP
laverfan - thanks for providing OoP
I always find a little odd this expression now customarily used by the schedulers "Not before 1pm" or "Not before 4.30pm" etc
Obviously it's a reference to the fact that earlier matches on the same court might well overrun (ie beyond 'normal' estimates) thus pushing subsequent stuff further back. But personally I would be more inclined to choose "1pm earliest" or maybe "1pm or later." (hardly a big issue, I admit ....)
Back in the 'ole days at SW19, play always began (er... weather permitting but IIRC the sun was ALWAYS shining ....!!) at 2pm prompt on the first Monday, and then everything else just followed from there (none of this "not before" business). And that opening match on centre would always involve the men's defending champ. So, once Wimby was finished you could mark your diary to the effect that precisely 12 months later, at precisely 2pm, you would see Mr Borg once again. And in fact it could well happen that you might not get the chance to ever see him 'live' again in between. There were sometimes only highlights of the French, and Borg traditionally never played any of the televised warm-up grass tourneys in England.
sorry lf - I'm not only wallowing in nostalgia but drifting well off-topic ......

So what will be the 'upset of the day'? I won't add a poll here because last time none of the options offerered actually happened!
My vote goes to Verdasco taking Almagro out - if that can be called an upset.

lags - you only have 'not before' for a match which is not the first of the day. Wimbledon does not have 'not before' because (a) it does not have different sessions when the spectators change (b) is not beholden to the TV so it does not need to specify a time before which a big match will not begin (c) apart from CC matches play has to end with daylight so there is not the time to spare to leave gaps between matches.

Re: Miami Masters 2012 - Monday 26 March 2012 - OoP
Many intriguing clashes today.
As regards upsets .....I'm wondering whether there could be one in Federer/Roddick .....
All laws of probability point to Fed going through, as we know.
But oddly enough, it was at Miami one year that Roddick finally broke the long spell of losses (giving rise to a paraphrased revival of the famous quip by Gerulaitis after eventually beating nemesis Connors - "let that be a lesson to everybody .... nobody beats Vitas Gerulaitis 17 times in a row....!")
Normal service (ho ho) was resumed the following year at Miami, and it's been Federer as usual ever since. BUT perhaps Roddick might feel less stressed about these encounters at this stage of his career, having slipped significantly in the rankings, and it could just help him to produce something special. Plus ..... Fed's impressive run post AO has to end at some point
barrystar - yep, valid points re Wimby scheduling of course where circumstances are very different (it was more the exact expression used that intrigued me a little)

B'star - You rarely get Murray as the first match of the day at Wimbledon unless it's a Saturday or royalty is present. He's invariably on around teatime to get the early evening slot so that BBC can have the biggest audience.

Roddick will be on fire before home crowd and take it as a chance for one last show off before retiring.
Going to 3, Fed taking it.

Thanks LF for the thread.
Really interesting video indeed. He seems to be suggesting that he has no control over the thing. This is just like fans of a certain player downplay these kinds of tactic in the name of OCD.
Back to today's matches. The only upset I can see today is Cilic defeating Del Potro if that happens based on the current form. But possibility of happening that is remote IMO.
And although Roddick is way down the ranking these days, I feel that this particular match would make him put on an inspired display. Hope Fed closes this out in straights.

For Troicki to win will require Djokovic giving out freebies. Something he isn't accustom to.

well the way it's been panning out all last year, with top 4 almost always in the semis, you'd think draws don't matter much these days...

This is getting plain ridiculous...
Now 6-1 3-0 up with a double-break in the 2nd...
18 winners for Cibulkova against 2 for Azarenka!!!

Wheels have come a bit off the wagon though.
From 6-1; 4-0 it's now 5-5 and Azarenka 30-0 on her own serve.
