Technology and rugby
One day in the none-too distant future I suspect, it will become economic to cover the entire playing surface with micro-cameras 50mm apart to record every playing event.
And chip technology will be similarly be able to precisely decide the relative motions of players and the ball. And of course as Moore's Law continues, a small , fully-programmed Law processor will emit a short beep when there is a violation.
Referees will hear in their ear the beeps and be able to officiate accordingly.
This is what he'll hear:
Beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep
Beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.
Beep.
Thank you for listening.

Really Stag?
It's hardly going to go viral though is it?
But I genuinely thought from planet Portnoy that it was worth contemplating.

Re: Technology and rugby
Really I think its a good post.
Its a clever way of showing that a referee who penalises everything is a bad referee and that technology sometimes over complicates officiating.

One day all that you say will happen - will happen, Portnoy.
But places like this will evolve too - and rather than questioning every second decision a ref makes now, we'll all be questioning every .000000001 of a second of program evidence. We'll have dedicated hackers who can break into systems and tell us they are both fallible and easily corruptible.
Oh yes, there'll still be places like this that says the Beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep! was wrong.

Surely you mean 314 147 155 51 170 5.
Surely there's a decimal-only restriction written somewhere in the house rules?

Well Portnoy, perhaps you are better at reading binary code than I am, but I meant to say.
010011101 10010011 10011011 00110011 10101010 00000101, don't you think?

Sorry 'Fly.
But I'm breaking new ground here. I've commented in morse before but the American Standard Code for Information Interchange is new territory here.
Maybe semaphore would be more appropriate?
