UCI to Ban Bananas?
Worrying reports coming through from Switzerland that the UCI is to take immediate measures to prohibit the consumption of bananas during all three Grand Tours and any other stage races where the majority of the stages exceed 100km distance.
This follows on the recent studies that showed the performance-enhancing properties of Phosphorus and Beta Carotene are significant when taken in fruit sugar during near-dehydration conditions as can occur during endurance sports, a prime candidate being competitive cycling.
There may be an exemption for the variety Lirpa Loof that originates from the Dominican Republic. This variety has long been known to have a slightly different chemical composition. However, it is understood that the UCI is concerned over verification issues and the opportunities this exemption may give to team appeals.

I don't know about cycling or the composition of bananas, but this seems very unlikely banning a substance is one thing but I doubt that a natural fruit could be banned.

Raymond - I suggest you check the datestamp on the original article - and then consider the name of the banana variety mentioned
