Which Do You Prefer - Flat or Jumps?
Which do you prefer Flat or Jumps?
I prefer the Jumps, not only do I find it more exciting to watch, I also prefer it because we get the chance to follow the same horses year in year out.
It often seems that when an exciting Flat horse appears on the scene, that it's soon whisked away for stud duties, which is understandable, but it means we don't often get to know these horses in the way we do with the Jumping stars such as Denman, Kauto, Hardy Eustace etc.
Of course there are exceptions with flat horses, Persian Punch for instance......who became a household name (RIP Persian Punch).
The big advantage that Flat racing does have over the Jumps, especially for the spectators, is the better weather : )
I sometimes wonder, from a punting point of view, if it's easier to pick winners on the flat......I imagine that it is but maybe I'm wrong.
I know this poll isn't very original but I would genuinely be interested to know which code of racing our members on here prefer.
Thanks in advance for voting

Re: Which do you prefer Flat or Jumps?
I prefer the jumps as its usually the only chance I have of winning, as my horses are usually behind, and there is always that chance that the last fence will bring down the leader (and the other 3 horses in front of mine!)
Re: Which do you prefer Flat or Jumps?
.... 2 Votes Cast and 100% for Jumps ... That be me and you then Solerina.
Got to agree...More 'Equine Characters' in the Jumps game, you've highlighted some of them above. Give me a cold winters day at Huntingdon over a nice warm summers day on the Flat any day of the week, it's much more fun wrapped up, trying to keep warm, watching your horse battling through rain, sleet and snow only to trail in last !!!!
As for the punting ... I find it just as easy to find losers on the flat as i do over the jumps !!!!!

I voted for the flat as I knew no one else would
I really can't decide to be honest. The way I look at it is this. At this time of the year I start to get excited by the start of the flat season, although I am not really following it until the Grand National is over. Tomorrow's cards are just boring. Then in the autumn by the time of the meeting in November at Cheltenham I am fully switched on to the jumps. As for all weather racing I am barely aware that it takes place.
Solerina I think you have hit the nail on the head, the fact that these horses keep coming back year after year is what is so special.
Sea the Stars was a great great flat horse but to retire him after 1 season was such a shame.
It can happen with flat horses too though and Persian Punch as you mentioned is a very good example. Also what about Yeats? FOUR Ascot Gold Cups in a row was a remarkable achievement. We are still waiting for that in jumps racing in the modern era. Maybe Long Run will be the horse to do it!

Ive voted for flat.
Its just my preference, i like to see the races with no variables, just pure racing ability showing the true speed of the horses.

No contest.National Hunt even at its lowest classes still has a certain amount of spectacle,Flat racing has none.National Hunt is still a sport,Flat is a business.National Hunt favourites can be around for years,Flat favourites are retired too quickly(too much money involved).
Flat is the easier option as a pure betting medium but i love this game as a sport and not just a money making exercise.
