Changes to prize money breakdown at Wimbledon
Seems like the player 'campaign' for higher prize money levels for early round losers has borne fruit - at least as far as Wimbledon goes .......

BBC Radio have only just announced this as hot-off-the-press news. Either the date quoted at top of the press release is misleading, or the Beeb are behind the times .......

WEll, this will make things a little fairer on the tour. A similar announcement was made for RG not that long ago. As for the Beeb being behind the times, never a truer word has been said!

Re: Changes to prize money breakdown at Wimbledon
I'm pleased by the change - a few of us were arguing not long ago for more even distribution of the prize money.
Others were saying it's all controlled by market forces and all players already got what they were 'worth'. Presumably, this years first round losers will be 'worth' more than last years.
Or perhaps by Wimbledon are merely "Recognising the rising costs associated with professional tennis" that we also recognised here.

This is good. Would love to see Davydenko show up and collect better money.
Perhaps Sergiy Stakhovsky will get enough to pay for his business class fare from Paris to London and the expensive hotels in London.

Re: Changes to prize money breakdown at Wimbledon
Excellent move by wimbeldon, the fact of the matter is that if you pay the midranking players like crap year in and year out you can't expect great depth on the tour or for the game to attract as many great athletes who could do other sports or other careers. The game obviously has the funds to do it, wimbeldon has no shortage in cash and neither do the other slams.
And as others have noted as well, travel and coaching costs eat up a huge chunk of the salaries of these mid level guys and to maintain competiveness this move was needed.

I see the Press Release is now dated 24 April, ie today. So perhaps an error on the link I originally found (which, for whatever reason, read 10 April), and Auntie Beeb is in the clear on this one ...!
