ERC Heineken Cup Final thread - Ulster v Leinster
First topic message reminder :
All roads lead to Twickenham for the clash of the Titans of Irish Rugby on 19/5/12.
Ulster Flag
Ulster for a long time dominated inter provincial rugby in Ireland. Some see this as the start of something big.
Leinster Flag
Leinster are blessed with an amazing cohort of talent, based around BOD. Is the third final in four years one too far for him? If Leinster do it they will create history with the first back to back wins (since Leicester apparently. Couldn't remember that, must have been devalued for some reason )
"@HarpinOnRugby: Sexton needs 15pts in the Heineken Cup final to become the first player to win back-to-back scoring titles in the competition. #2amrugbyfact"
Ulster have failed to make the Rabo playoffs. Will an extra game against Glasgow this weekend help or hinder Leinster? Will a lack of a competitive game hinder Ulster?
Meanwhile, we conducted a vox pops:
"Leinster all day, all night and all the next week. It's in the bag. BELIEVE"
Mr Gibson
"We are gonna Party like its 1999! SUFTUM!"

"Ulster are in CRISIS!"

There have been 35 tries scored in 16 Heineken Cup Finals. Will this game be above or below average in terms of tries?

Nice one Stand! I'd be tempted but I'm already sorted. Although I'd take flights any day over my horrendous ferry itinerary!
10.30pm overnight ferry (no cabin) to liverpool, and returning on 5.30am ferry from stranraer on Sunday morning with an hour or two sleeping in car! Yikes!

Excellent Jen, love TM. Love Art Farmer and Charlie Mingus too. Bruxcelles used to be good for jazz - is it still there or is there somewhere else now?
BTW I also love Dire Straits - the solo in Sultans on Alchemy always gets the hairs up on the back of my neck. Knopfler was also influenced by Django Reinhardt - not only his music but also his technique (especially since DR had only two working fingers on his left hand).

OK seeing as we have already dragged this poor thread waay off track.
Bruxelles is still there I think but not the Jazz. Big statue of Philo outside it now. (Phil Lynott)
On Dire Straits (Aptly named band or what )
When Sultans came out I was a young teenage guitar player. It knocked us all out. We thought they were the new Beatles.
It was a confusing time in music. Punk had kicked off and even dinosaurs like the "straits" seemed to have a lease of life.
Bands like Eddie and the hot rods and the Blockheads who had been pub rockers were considered "new wave"
Then we heard the rest of the album.......... Hmmm. Perhaps not the Beatles but still good....
Then the "difficult" 2nd album came out. (and I suppose we were that bit older) Seriously heading downhill....... and after that they just seemed to plumb new depths every time. By the time the 80s came along and they had stooped to stuff like "walk of life" Enough to make you want to stab yourself in the ears with knives rather than suffer the pain of listening to it.
The guy's a good player, has an individual style etc. But who the fock ever let him sing?
But hey.... Opinions are like ar$eholes. Everybody's got one.

Re: ERC Heineken Cup Final thread - Ulster v Leinster
Some facts and figures about the Final; http://www.ercrugby.com/eng/news/18208.php
More Irish players have won Heineken Cup medals than any other nationality!
More Irish players have won Heineken Cup medals than any other nationality!
* Leinster Rugby will be bidding to win an unprecedented three Heineken Cup titles in four years and become only the second club to win back-to-back titles. Leicester Tigers (2001 and 2002) are the only club so far to successfully defend their title. Leinster, with seven wins and a draw so far, are also bidding to become the first club to go through a tournament unbeaten.
* Ulster Rugby, the 1999 champions, will be bidding to become the sixth club to win two or more titles.
* Brad Thorn, the Leinster Rugby lock and 2011 World Cup winner with New Zealand, could become the oldest player to appear in a Heineken Cup final. Born on 3 February, 1975, he will be 37 years three months and 16 days old on the day of the 17th final. The oldest player to appear in a final is Perpignan's replacement hooker Marc dal Maso who was 36 years three months and 10 days old when they lost the 2003 final to Toulouse.
* The oldest Heineken Cup winner is Leicester Tigers prop Darren Garforth who was 36 years one month and 19 days old when the Tigers won the 2002 final.
* It will be the fifth one-nation final - but the first all-Irish final. There have been three all-French finals and one all-English final.
* The all-Irish final means an Irish club will have won the Heineken Cup five times in the last seven years and also that Ireland will have an additional place in the 2012/13 tournament with Connacht Rugby joining Leinster Rugby, Munster Rugby and Ulster Rugby.
* It will be the first tournament meeting between the sides and that will come in what will be tournament Match No 1,214.
* Leinster were the ninth club to lift the trophy with their 2009 triumph following Toulouse (4), Leicester Tigers, Munster and London Wasps (2 each), Brive, Bath Rugby, Ulster Rugby and Northampton Saints.
* Austin Healey is the only player to have won two Heineken Cup final man-of-the-match awards, doing it in the Tigers' back-to-back triumphs in 2001 and 2002.
* There are 274 players from the 16 match day 22/23-man squads who own Heineken Cup final winners' medals - six have three medals and Cedric Heymans is out on his own with four (with Brive in 1997 and Toulouse in 2003, 2005 and 2010). The triple winners are Toulouse players Clement Poitrenaud, Vincent Clerc, Yannick Jauzion, Jean-Baptiste Poux, William Servat and Jean Bouilhou.
* The most tries scored in a final are the four by Brive when they beat Leicester Tigers 28-9 in Cardiff in 1997. The 19-point winning margin is the biggest in the 15 finals.
* Only four of the 74 double winners have collected medals with different clubs. As well as Heymans, Philippe Carbonneau did it with Toulouse (1996) and Brive (1997), Federico Mendez with Bath Rugby (1998) and Northampton Saints (2000) and Eoin Reddan with London Wasps (2007) and Leinster Rugby last season.
* Players from 17 different nationalities are on the winners' roll of honour, headed by 73 Irishmen, 72 Englishmen and 71 Frenchmen. There are also players from Scotland (11), New Zealand (10), Wales and South Africa (8 each), Samoa, Argentina and Australia (5 each), and one from each of Italy, USA, Canada, Poland, Fiji, Tonga and the Cook Islands.
* The all-Ireland semi-final between Munster and Leinster at Croke Park in 2009 was watched by a then world record crowd for a club rugby match of 82,208.
* The most points scored by an individual in a final is the 30 kicked by Stade Français Paris' Diego Dominguez (nine penalty goals and a drop goal) in the 2001 defeat by Leicester. The most points scored in a Heineken Cup final are the 64 rattled up at Parc des Princes in 2001. The 34 scored that day by Leicester Tigers is the most scored by a team in a final and the 30 scored by Stade Francais Paris is the most scored by a losing team.
* Only two of the 16 finals have failed to produce a try - when Ulster Rugby beat Colomiers 21-6 in 1999 and when Toulouse needed extra time in the 2005 final to beat Stade Francais Paris 18-12.
* Raphael Ibanez, the former London Wasps hooker and Heineken Cup 2012 ambassador, was the only front five forward to score a try in a Heineken Cup final - until the 2011 showpiece match at the Millennium Stadium. Then he was joined by Northampton Saints hooker Dylan Hartley and Leinster lock Nathan Hines. Only nine forwards have scored Heineken Cup final tries - the others being flankers David Wallace (Munster, 2000), Neil Back (Leicester Tigers, 2001), Ben Woods (Leicester Tigers, 2009) and Phil Dowson (Northampton Saints, 2011) and No8s Denis Leamy (Munster, 2008) and Jamie Heaslip (Leinster, 2009).
* In 2009 Leinster became the 14th club to contest a Heineken Cup final. The other Heineken Cup finalists have been Toulouse (6), Leicester Tigers (5), Munster (4), London Wasps, Stade Francais Paris, Brive, Biarritz Olympique (2), Cardiff RFC, Bath Rugby, Ulster Rugby, Colomiers, Northampton Saints and Perpignan (1 each).
*The 16 finals have produced 32 tries - an average of two per match - with three players scoring braces. They are Sebastien Carrat (Brive, 1997), Leon Lloyd (Leicester Tigers, 2001) and Jonny Sexton for Leinster Rugby 12 months ago.
* Two of the finals have required extra time to determine the winner and Toulouse won on both occasions, against Cardiff in 1996 and Stade Français Paris in 2005.

Jenny, sublime musical taste Sir. It comes with the territory roysh. The Great Ausketeer, Notch and I, also have similar tastes it seems. Its an Ulstuur/Leinstuur 1st-tier thang. Nowt to do with location. More inclination.
Please don't mention Dire Straights (most aptly named band ever) - in the same sentence as Django or TH. Pap. Total and utter pap. In my condescending opinion.
Believe.

Kind of like an open Ab tuning then Mick. Basically the same as Open G but down a half step. Sounds cool.
I ALWAYS play in Standard Tuning, always have done. I've a theory it's easier to start experimenting with tunings at an early stage of playing. My brain is totally hardwired to standard tuning to be honest. I no longer think about it between wanting to hear the sound and playing the note, and thats the problem- because if the tuning is changed then that instinctive knowledge is useless.

Biltong- the stigma regarding capos is they mean playing the guitar takes less skill, not more!
I've come across guitarists who would pour scorn on any so-called professional musician who uses a capo. I think thats bollox myself but you'll get fanatical purists in any walk of life...

Re: ERC Heineken Cup Final thread - Ulster v Leinster
Notch, I have only been playing for a year, and are now currently trying to master picking as I have a few songs I need to be able to pick by year end when we want to entertain our friends and family.
We had our first "live" session two weekends ago, and overall the crit was good that we recieved.
But as far as capo's , bar chords etc, I am not there yet, just pure natural rythm guitar.
I tune my guitar according to the standard tuning and just play it from there.
At my age there is no time for pretenses, just playing.

Re: ERC Heineken Cup Final thread - Ulster v Leinster
I think you'll find as you expand your repertoire that using capos will help you play a wider range of material because it'll give you easy access to a lot of different keys that are hard to play without mastering barre chords. That said, a ridiculously disproportionate number of songs are in Emaj/C#min, Gmaj/Emin, Cmaj/Amin or Fmaj/Dmin! So you're fine really.
You might want to experiment with different keys and transposition once you get more confident if you're working with a singer, because they might find they are comfortable in a higher or lower register.
Like you say, no time for pretentiousness- whatever sounds good, just do it! Whatever you do, make sure you enjoy every bit of it

Re: ERC Heineken Cup Final thread - Ulster v Leinster
I have a selection of songs that suits my voice, so I am pretty comfortable with the standard tuning.
My solo songs for ths "gig" we are preparing is.
A spaceman came travelling
Moonshadow
Morning has broken
Father and son
Imagine
Desperado
Mad world
They sound pretty good, the trick is now to pick desperado and Mad world.
Our singalong songs are simple stuff like seasons in the son, piano man, sailing, green beret and the like

Good man Bil! Self entertaining is what it's all about!
Notch, I'll how to your superior knowledge, I dont even know the names of most of ye chords I play, Rocky Raccoon, I know there's a G7 and a Dm I'm there but I don't know the other chord names.
Jen, I can play a bar chord but even George Harrion used a capo for Here Comes the Sun, and that's good enough for me!

Biltong, if you are only starting to learn the guitar I'd suggest you check out Justinguitar.com or Marty Swartz on youtube. Both do lessons ranging from beginners to expert, and they cover most of the songs you've mentioned above. Great for people just getting into guitar.
Also, capos are fine. It's so annoying, people thinking that they are purists and pour scorn over the use of them. Most people play guitar for fun, but like anything, you get snobs.
It was also mentioned Mark Knopfler ruining Raglan Road. Check out Van Morrison and the Chieftains covering it, excellent, second only to Luke Kelly.

Stefan Terblanche has written a blog about the Final;

What a legend of the game
Especially his comments about the women of Swansea
https://www.facebook.com/notes/stefan-terblanche/battle-lines-have-been-drawn/10150785449234803
The battle lines have been drawn in the Northern Hemisphere and 2 Irish teams will travel to Twickenham in London for the biggest prize in rugby up North. Irish giants Leinster, will have an opportunity to defend their crown against their little brother from Northern Ireland,Ulster. It's the final of the Heineken Cup and the end to a long and sometimes very cold and unforgiving season from across the Equator.
Leinster has been the form team in Europe over the last 2 seasons and with a team sheet full of internationals and players treated as gods on the emerald isle,it will take a mammoth effort from any team to rob them of their title and one of which they will not let go that easily.
I said it before and I will say it again, for any player in the professional era it is always exciting to experience new things. For me on a personal note it will bring the curtain down on a long and very enjoyable rugby career on the pitch. To play in a Heineken Cup final at what's often been described as the home of rugby and in front of an expected crowd of 82 500 will be something new that I have never experienced before. What an honor and privilege . This will off course only happen if I am fit, injury free and selected.
Players coming to the end of their careers often ask the question......."when is it enough?" In my last few seasons I really had to push myself hard, not to be the best but just to compete with players half my age! I now throw the match day program straight in the bin when arriving at my cubicle in the change rooms on game day and to look at the profiles of the opposition is often off putting - spotting your direct oppositions birth date as the year you’ve finished school! A little bit off putting but also quite humorous to the other players in my team.
On another humorous note, I did receive my 2nd yellow card in my 440th first class game for an apparent punch which upon further investigation would even be harsh if you called it a slap! That's embarrassing- not the yellow card in one of the most important games of my life but the ‘women like slap’. Mind you I have seen some 'lady' throw a haymaker outside a Swansea pub late one night which I would have been very proud of. My late dad must be turning in his grave.
The Sharks are back in action this week and even though they have had an indifferent season up to now they are still in 7th position and very much in the hunt for a top 6 finish and a shot at the play-offs. Whether they have left too much work to be done in the 2nd half of the tournament will be revealed in the next few weeks but the margin for error and further losses is now something that they can I'll afford.
Get your beautiful behinds down to Mr Price Kingspark and go and make some noise. The boys really need you.
Cheers,
Stefan

BUMP
So according to Thornley in today’s Times the only real injury concern for Leinster is BOD. Darcy had a flesh wound and Healy was walking fine by full time. O’Malley is definitely out but was unlikely to feature this week anyway. Squad update should be out today and will probably tell us NOTHING.

BOD isn't to train to Thursday is that right? Leinsters preperations will be severly effected without any of their centres, bar McFadden, fully available during the week.
It looks like this could be Ulsters year afterall.....

I don’t know when he’s training Rods, will hopefully find out today what’s going one.
If I were you I’d be worried about Henry not playing for a month and Afoa not playing for 6 weeks. Oh and Ferris only having one leg!
Advantage Ulster.
Mind games?
What?
I’m doing it wrong?
Ok then.
Advantage Leinster.
Even I’m confused.
