Lions wings?
First topic message reminder :
I would love to see Visser & North with Cuthbert and Bowe fighting out for the Bench place.

Doesn't matter who he plays outside Ashton can't score. Looked good for a couple of games
Thats a bit of a silly comment.
93 tries in 111 appearances for Saints
15 tries in 23 appearances for England
That compares pretty favourably to North's
5 tries in 26 appearances for Scarlets
10 tries in 21 appearances for Wales

I know what you mean. Some posters really do spout poppycock.
It's fair enough to say Ashton is a bit out of form but folk seem to just be out to slate him.maestegmafia wrote:Doesn't matter who he plays outside Ashton can't score. Looked good for a couple of games but all gone a bit pear shaped for him.
I seem to remember Shane getting plenty of Lions tour games to improve his form last time around. I think he played almost every midweek game!

Re: Lions wings?
Is it any suprise that North, at 20 years old, is having a slight case of second season syndrome? He's likely to be back in good form by the time the Lions tour comes around.
He seems best suited on form to oppose the relatively small, yet very powerfull Ioane. Bowe pretty much has to start on the other wing, he's the best all round wing available.

Is North really doing much better in that regard? Only 3 tries in the WC (against Namibia & Fiji), just the 1 try in the 6N and not a single try in any competition (12 appearances) for Scarlets this season.
I wouldn't start either on current form, but then they've got a year to prove themselves.
That's quite surprising, I didn't realise he was on such a drought.
I know it's fashionable to have a big lad on the wing, but I'd probably go for Bowe and Halfpenny, more consistently proven quality footballers. Particularly as we're likely to have a pretty physical midfield, I think we'll need a couple of players with a bit more dancing ability to outwit the Aussie backline.

Re: Lions wings?
I think that has a lot to do with the haphazard way North (and the other Scarlets backs) have been played this season - they didn't even train together for a whole week until early January and since then haven't strung many games together until the end of the season - I wouldn't say his form has been really poor, more the fact that he's only in the team for a max of 3 games before being off with Wales or injured.

Re: Lions wings?
Halfpennys prodigous kicking and the fact that he also a more than decent wide man will secure him one of the wing berths. You heard it here first.

It was SO perfect that for a moment there was a double post (before it was deleted). Ok, I was amused anyway!dragonbreath wrote:You heard it here first.

Re: Lions wings?
Why are people picking their three starters a year out from the tests! Ridiculous.
Form in the three months before the squad is picked and then on the tour itself will dictate the test starters.

I think Visser will surprise a few people here. He'll adapt to international rugby pretty well and may be a good shout for the Lions.

I'd expect to see at least one speedy wee fella thrown into the mix as well. I guess Halfpenny will probably go as full back/wing cover, and Foden as well.
It all sounds very promising until you consider how good that Aussie backline will be:
9.Genia 10.Cooper 11.Mitchell 12.Barnes 13.AAC 14.JOC 15.Beale
We have some very good options forming for the Lions, but as a creative force we'll be up against an extraordinary group of players.
three of those are likely injured. Expect the unexpected...!
The unexpected indeed! Cooper started playing yesterday & JOC is back in training aiming to play his first game before the first test. Good news for the neutrals!

Re: Lions wings?
I don't think Visser doing well at international rugby and being a possible option for Lions will be that much of a surprise. I think it's the assumption that he will stroll into his first season in international rugby and the Lions that is raising a few eyebrows.overlordofthewest wrote:I think Visser will surprise a few people here.
