NZ Super XV attendences up
According to the Otago Daily Times crowds are flocking back to Super Rugby in NZ this season. Crowd numbers are up 37% on average across the 5 franchises, with even the Blues seeing crowd numbers up (admittedly the Crusaders' numbers are a bit meaningless given the disruption caused by last year's earthquake, and them switching to a smaller ground this season as a result). TV viewership is up 33% as well.
Success certainly has it's benefits for the Chiefs - their crowds have almost doubled on last year.

Crowds on the up is always good news. And if tv numbers are up that's good news as well. I wonder what the attendance numbers and tv numbers are for Aus and SA and how they ompare to previous years.
On the other hand, I just watched the second half of the Hurricanes-Brumbies match and it seemed the crowd was very small.

I think I remember hearing the Aussie numbers were up. Can't find a link though.
The trouble with the big stadium in Wellington (35,000 capacity, when there's only 300,000 people living within 2 hours drive) is that if it's half full it looks empty (a la Cardiff City Stadium). And given the weather I suspect the walk-up crowd opted to find somewhere drier for their Friday evening.

Only these http://www.statbunker.com/rugby/btb/index.php?PL=competition&CompID=400&statType=home_Att
And they look incomplete, with some definite errors in the 2011 numbers (130,000 at a Stormers match )

The stats was probably compiled by a sensitive Aussie, and it felt like 130 000Kiwireddevil wrote:biltongbek wrote:any stats for SA?

Touche. Apparently last season was the Waratahs' worst ever for attendances

We're up and down Kiwi.
30,000+ when they're doing well; then less than 14,000 in some games. Probably average in the mid-high teens I'd say.

Only kidding, though you did lose that one against a team not really firing at the moment. Still a bigger crowd than what they have at Addington. Damn earthquake robbing us of our home fortress.

Yes, it's such a shame. My Mum used to do athletics at Lancaster Park so it has special connections with our family.
Was QEII damaged? Or are they not allowed to use that ground either?

QEII is a write-off . It was built on reclaimed swamp land, and the liquefaction was awful.

So sad.
I still have a bright green T-shirt from the '74 Comm Games somewhere.
I used to love wearing that as a kid. It's so tiny now.
