Are Majors overrated?
First topic message reminder :
In the context of measuring a golfers career, is too much emphasis given to Major wins?
A talented golfer can come under pressure early in his career to prove himself by winning Majors. This pressure will grow year after year until he lands a title or gets crushed by the weight of expectation. Is this justified?
Likewise if a top golfer finishes his career without a Major, that will always be a cloud hanging over his other achievements.
Consider 2 players: Padraig Harrington and Colin Montgomerie. Who in your opinion has had the better career and is your decision based on Majors?

Average player with a major! Did someone mention McDowell!!!!
Would like to see Luke break through even if he only ever bags one because his consistency is superb.

Majors over-rated? No; not IMO.
Have to say I'm impressed to hear that TW has won 16 WGCs though.

I'm with you re. McDowell good though his U.S. Open win was. Streaky, hasn't been on it for some time now and may never get back to that level.

Re: Are Majors overrated?
Nbs: I think you describing McDowell as streaky is as perfect choice of words. He had a great run in 2010, but looking at his form before that year and since and there is nothing to show his as better than being a decent tour player and imo not one worthy of a top 20 world ranking.
He had a couple of wins pre 2010 but even then the seasons were earth shatteringly great.

Re: Are Majors overrated?
To be a great you in my view then maybe 7/8+ majors
The word great is banded around, 2 or more majors and multiple tour wins would make you very good.
Anyone with a major and multiple tour wins, or just 2 majors - is a good golfer.
Anyone else, is a decent tour pro.

Mysti
Stop splitting hairs! The point's valid though; if too many are "great", that kind of undermines the word IMO.

Re: Are Majors overrated?
Personally major wins is just part of the process in assessing who is a 'great'. I wouldnt call poddy or larry nelson true greats of the game. But Norman 100% yes- he was a true legend of the game. Yet the two i mentioned before have an extra major.

Re: Are Majors overrated?
Agreed. Another "where do you draw the line?" scenario methinks.
