both are violent- it just the later is much more dangerous
One was trying to deliberately injure a player, the other wasn't and really Cahill was unlucky.
It was hardly a Harold Schumacher esque collision, Mertens was a bit naughty but again I don't think it was a violent push into his own goalkeeper or an attempt to injure a players.

i have a simple question for you.
if he was given a red card- would you be on here arguing against the decision?

Yes I did, didn't think much of it - thought Cahill was unlucky, wasn't much of a shove.
He pushed Cahill into his own goalkeeper - where is the confusion?
I wouldn't argue against a red card in a game of little interest but I don't really think it merited one.
You base a punishment on an action, not it's repercussions imo.

Re: Gary Cahill out
I never saw the incident so I can't actually comment too much on it specifically.
John Terry's WAS a straight red. He deliberately tried to injure Sanchez(?) and got what he deserved.
Is it without doubt that Mertens pushed Cahill into Hart? Seeing as he got booked I assume so.
You see players colliding with keepers often; sometimes they get injured, sometimes they don't. You could have been unfortunate and had both Hart AND Cahill scunnered.

Re: Gary Cahill out
I can't see the quote or who it is from...
anyway I don't really think it merited a red card at the time or now I know he is injured.
If you did/do then fair enough we will have to disagree.

Not really, the general reaction has gone up since we found out Cahill is out. You yourself initially wanted him sent off but in this thread now want him up on charges etc
Really Cahill is a big guy and he and hart were roughly 2 metres apart and not moving particularly fast when Mertens pushed him - it was very unlucky but lets not make it out like some sort of assault.

Apologies if I misunderstood, you should say what you mean.
Other people in the thread who haven't seen the incident wanting him banned because Cahill is injured.
Quite a few others thinking it wasn't a red.
Not sure where I am wrong, in my opinion it was a soft foul and unlucky injury that didn't merit a red card - some people think action should be taken because Cahill got injured.

Re: Gary Cahill out
Pal the only thing i was saying you were wrong about was you assuming I was changing my stance based on an injury to one of englands players- i thought it was shocking at the time.
I never thought it was a soft foul. It was very dangerous as prooved- but even if it didnt turn serious, the fact is it was a blatant bit of cheating at best. that is not a soft foul in my eyes.
You have cut and pasted part of my comments on this to try and prove a point that there isnt. I menetioned that the above happens in rugby if people feel the ref didnt do enough at the time. The charge or hearing could determine if what he did warranted a red card and then if it is deemed to be then he should miss games as he would if he was sent off

Re: Gary Cahill out
I have to agree with Mys. When I saw the incident live I was shocked that Mertens did what he did. It was such a dangerous challenge and in my view cowardly. Yes, Cahill wasn't running, but Hart was to collect the ball, and Mertens gave Cahill a right 'ol shove and Cahill and Hart were lucky it wasn't a head-on-head collision, otherwise it could have been more serious.
What is also dangerous is neither player knew what was coming, they had no idea Mertens was going to shove Cahill into an on rushing goalkeeper, so neither could brace themselves for the impact. If you see someone lunging with a two footed tackle you can take action to get out of harms way or at least protect yourself in some fashion, this couldn't have occurred in this instance.
It was no shock to learn Cahill was out after seeing the push live and then in replay's. I believe he should either get a short ban or a hefty fine because I can tell you pushes like the one we saw, having happened to me in a football match, is so dangerous and in my view just as dangerous as a two footed tackle, something we are trying to rid the game of at this present moment.

Theres barely anything in it, Hart is stationary (more or less) waiting to collect the ball - there isn't a whole lot of contact between them, just bad luck on Cahills part.
Anyway just going to have to agree to disagree.
