Beach Golf
Hi guys, read the forum a bit but wouldn't have enough knowledge to offer a decent opinion. Just have a question for you, has anyone here played golf on a beach? It was how I played the game in my youth, mainly because I had a house near the beach and the local golf course was around 20 miles away. I think it's a great way to learn how to play the game as different parts of beaches vary in firmness, thus mimicking actual courses. I know that's how Seve first practiced his game.
So anyoen here ever golfed on a beach?

I think this is a bit of a rose tinted view of seve's youth that has been reported so many times people believe it to be true. It ties in with an image of poverty and hardship, where he had to chip with a 3 iron among the dunes as he could not play on a course.
Which is Love sacks, his uncle was a local pro and you would not have been anywhere near a golf course in 1950/60's spain unless you were firmly upper middle class.
To the question;
Yes I have chipped around on the beach before. It can be pretty fun but you need to find quite a deserted beach or people are in danger.

Re: Beach Golf
I think I heard Seve say it in that documentary they made on him for the BBC last year, I might have got the wrong end of the stick on that one admittedly. Yep, has to be an empty beach or you have to be pretty accurate. Thankfully, there are plenty of beaches in West Cork so you're not stuck for places to go!

Re: Beach Golf
In my youth I have used the beach as a practice ground during hard frosts and snow.
You have to be a very good striker to get a decent shot away.

Re: Beach Golf
Used to take a couple of wedges to my grand parents for holidays in Cornwall and hit balls on flat tidal sands - very tight lies indeed and definitely helped my ball striking. Practiced bunker shots off soft beaches as well and my bunker play's never looked back.
