Barry Mc Guigan
Morning lads.
Now we all know the McGuigangate has been done ad nauseum before and I'm not here to bring that up again. There's no denying Barry is one of the greatest fighters our wee Island has produced regardless of what side of the fence you reside.
However, I'm in work this morning and the Stephen Nolan show is on the radio. There is an interesting debate going on about the decision not to ask Barry, someone who has done so much for sport and peace in NI, to carry the Olympic torch in Ireland, while other less deserving people (Jedward were asked.
A statement was made by the Olympic Committe stating that there were only a certain amount of invitations giving to different sportsmen and other personalities.
I personally can't see too many people being more desrving than Barry of carrying it as regards to sportsmen in Ireland.
So what's your thoughts on the issue? Big deal about nothing? Or a snub to one of our best boxers?
Cheers

I think he should definately have been asked before the likes of Jedward, although i've seen other people carrying it like John Bishop, what's that all about.

Re: Barry Mc Guigan
Ye I'm hearing Wayne Mc Cullough and Patrick Kielty, Chris Moyles and others like that have been carrying it. Even Will I Am ffs. I'm in Mc Guigans's corner here but a few people that have riang up are of the opinion that he has no divine right to it so just putting it out to the floor now.
Its a sporting competition so I've no idea why random celebrities have been asked

Should the Olympic Torch even go through Ireland?
I'm sure they would not allow it to go through the UK had they gotten the Olympics. We should ask Sebastien Coe why those were chosen ahead of Mcguigan.

Unfortunately today's world is more about celebrity than anything else. Will I Am carried it at one point and spent the whole time tweeting, now those repulsive turds Jedward are getting it ahead of a NI legend like Barry.
It's a disgrace but I can't see it changing.

They've probably seen his rude habit of interrupting every colleague on Sky boxing ....his habit of getting predictions wrong..and the way he talks like he was sugar ray leonard and not a guy that caught an old decrepid Pedroza and lost to a part time cab driver...
and maybe think Jedward were more deserving!!!
Or maybe mcguigan needs to go on the Xfactor...
me I'd have had Azumah Nelson carrying it in Ireland..

Josiah, don't want a Ireland/Uk debate going here. I only heard in passing some of the other names doing it. In fairness to the likes of John Bishop he has been doing a lot of Charity work in marathons I think.

No Truss he's been complaining himself. Said he feels hurt and let down. In fairness he does have a point. I'm disappointed that the Jedward ***** were asked before me, never mind Barry.

It's a disgrace to have non-Brits carrying the torch!
I mean Will-I-Am thought the Jublilee was for the Queen's birthday
I think celebrity's should have been left for sporting heroes only but the whole thing is a bit of a joke, I mean Chris Moyles done it in Wales!?!

Tophat, hello!
The torch did start off at North. Ireland then went through Dublin, which is not part of the UK. Unless the highlights were fake.
Chris Moyles has raised alot of money for charity, rightfully was given a go on the torch. Mcguigan may have a torch phobia.

Re: Barry Mc Guigan
I can see why John Bishop was asked to do it, the charity work alone he has done this year has been astounding. However Jeward and Will I Am! complete bull poo.

Fair enough to Bishop if he's been doing charity work.

Shouldn't have gone through Eire according to the official route - http://www.london2012.com/torch-relay/route/
NI, being part of the UK, is fine but it shouldn't have crossed the border.

Re: Barry Mc Guigan
It did travel from Newry to Dublin. Probably special dispensation due to the delicate nature of the divide here. Anyway besides the point. The Irish debate is neither here nor there.
