How long is your big stick?
Right folks, willy measuring time, or the female equivalent??
How far do you hit your driver? We are not talking down wind on a baked hard links but on the flat, no helping wind, and roughly what it would carry.
I would estimate I can get about 240 yards carry with a good strike. And for those that are into this sort of thing; my 5 iron carries about 175.
If I use the following tool it claims I should be hitting the driver 277 yards.
http://www.csgnetwork.com/golfclubdistancecalce.html
In my dreams maybe.
So come on people whip it out.
PS - I will construct a league table at the end and the loser can add this title as their entry to the ball marker of shame.

Re: How long is your big stick?
Probably about 260ish carry with the driver but I do hit it quite high. And according to that calculator thing I should be hitting 290.

Re: How long is your big stick?
I get on average 250-260 out of a drive, so for arguments sake say 255.
According to the willy measuring stats in the above link I should be hitting 288! Complete guff!

Who cares how far, its about where you put it for your next shot. Hitting a ball as far as you can is silly golf.
Most if the time a driver just isn't necessary and often harmful.

Agreed Super, I'm happy with my 255 from the fairway I'd rather not sacrifice accruracy for distance

Super
This is just a bit of fun. So come on when you can hit a driver and open up the shoulders - say number 14 TOC - how far do you normally hit it?

Re: How long is your big stick?
In all honesty Mac I've never measured the carry of a driver, more the complete distance.
I play with a draw so get a fair bit of run. I probably carry 240, perhaps 250 on a good day, and maybe 20-30 yards of run out on a windless flat links. I think most people over estimate how far they hit every club which is why most greens have protection at the front.
Don't always hit driver on TOC 14 anyway, as it is often out of range in two with an east wind. No point hitting a driver if you can't get up in two, wood to middle fairway is always the best option as you won't run the risk of ob right or running off fairway left.

I will put you down as 240 super, that way we can be the shortest hitters along with nay bother.
Super
If I hit less than driver on 14 i find my second shot becomes a very difficult lay up.

Mac, two options, aim right of green for safer approach, or go way left onto other fairway avoid flirting with hell bunker.

FWIW, I get about 250 carry on a good strike. Radar a problem at the moment though!

280. Radar always a problem!! Can hit a 3 wood far enough and a lot straighter, so that is usually the preferred choice of the tee.

I guess my total distance would be around 250 to 260 mark. I hit a low ball so the carry might be 230 to 240 ish. Feeling pretty inadequate really

I hit a carry of about 220 to 225 yards so always about 240 yards straight down the middle of the fairway

I've been on in two a couple of times with two 3irons at our 537 yard par 5 8th hole. (forced layup at 280 yards). Can anyone beat that
p.s its a parkland course so no links bounces need apply.

Re: How long is your big stick?
Drive carry about 240 yards I believe, I use different drivers for the course I am playing, depending on the firmness of the fairways. The calculator thingy is not far out for me!
I would very happily lose 50 yards off the eventual drive length, if I could be promised I would never take more than 2 putts/green!

Re: How long is your big stick?
I reckon with my normal swing it's about 240 carry.
Thing is the predictor thing was pretty accurate for me so I not sure what you other guys were putting in. Didn't understand the section about mechanics mind you. How would the people that fix my Ford Focus affect how far I hit my golf ball?
I guess I could hit it much further but the chances of it going straight are about 1 in 20 so it seems a rather stupid thing to do given that it is not the purpose of the game.

270 average.
Would happily let that drop 25 yards if it meant more accuracy.
I'm either bullet straight or in massive trouble.

About 210 yards carry
.
.
I once hit a drive over 400 yards so for some on this board I can drive 405 yards.

Yeah. What is it about that? Seems to be me all over at the moment as well. I'm sure I used to drive better when I had an old, persimmon driver with a small head - not convinced about how easy it is to square these big 460cc heads up at impact...Conehead wrote:...I'm either bullet straight or in massive trouble.

I too hate big-headed drivers(the human kind aswell). Wonder if it's possible to get a three wood head with 10 degrees of loft, and would much distance be lost?navyblueshorts wrote:Yeah. Re: How long is your big stick?
Was thinking about this thread last night as I played my 2nd round in singles matchplay.
Played a guy off 15 so had to give him 5 shots, and he tried to kill the ball on every swing, admittedly it went a bloody long way a good 30 yards plus past me, as I doddered around the 250yard mark.
Anyway, nearly every time it came to pitting driver against driver I was well behind him but in the fairway whilst he was a good 30yards further down in the tiger country. We finished our match on the 15th with me winning 5&3, and all he could say was you did well but you'll never be as long as me..
I thought his chat about his "length" was ironic considering short and steady had just beaten him and his full bore man sized driving. I'll take my shorter distance and accurate play over any drive 280+ in the rough
*Edit: even more ironic that i'm 3rd on Mac's "length" list. I'm one of the shortest hitters at my club at 250 except for the old boy

Is 250ish your carry or total distance? I was just looking for carry if you read the original post.

I so rarely actually get the true sweet spot on my large headed driver, in fact I'm sure that some of the swings I make now, I'd have missed the ball completely with my old persimmon driver (which I've still got - I loved that club). Trouble is the off centre hits go as far as a real good one with the persimmon. That's why I changed.

That is my carry Mac, get naff all run on our course probably sy the 255 is including the 5 yards roll we get. Our fairways are kept relatively soft and factor in the wind we get makes our course a tough prospect

There's something unappealing about 460cc drivers, personally I think a golf club should be a fine instrument rather than a vulgar distance machine.

Re: How long is your big stick?
Mac,a happy as I am sutting there on the board, that is my potential distance using calculator, I am about 200 normally.
Fader I am not long anyway, but have started taking 5 irons off the Tee on a lot more holes, the distance lost is not so great as it may take me three shots still to get to green, but at least they are all of fairway instead of. 3 shots with a chip out of treed

Re: How long is your big stick?
NayB. don't blame you, even though I class myself as an accurate player, I use a 3 wood off a lot of tees and a 4 iron at a couple of the par 4's.
Have started doing it at 2 of the par 5's as well, I know I can't reach in 2 so may as well play 3 shots from the best position rather than risk missing fairway

If there is a hurricane behind me, the ball is carried on the back of a large bird flying down the fairway for a few seconds and it has a nice forward bounce of a sprinkler head, then it might just get past the ladies tee.

i think my problem is that i get more satisfaction hitting a booming drive that leads to a bogey than an average 3 wood that leads to a par!

My driving normally makes or breaks my rounds.
I'm quite consistent with my irons and i've always been a decent putter but my driving consistency is normally the difference between a great round versus an average round.
Take yesterday for example- 6 drives nailed down the middle, all pars and 1 birdie but then 4 snap hooks that all led to bogeys and higher.
If I drive well i score well but bar the rounds when everything comes together it's rare that I ever feel 100% confident with any type of wood in my hand.
Some of my mates obssess over distance. I drive it far but then some of my mates hit PW's 140 which I find mental! I don't have a fast swing but i'm pretty tall which I think gives me an advantage with the driver.
My next golf lesson is Driver specific so hopefully I can get some tips to unlock some stability with the Big Dog.

true story - though i'll admit to perfect conditions, warm, a helpful following breeze and firm-ish fairways. Still , four very sweetly struck irons!
As for being a beast - i was nicknamed king kong by playing partners in a random draw texas scramble last year! (though my average stats are a long way short of some others quoted on here).

Re: How long is your big stick?
I'm still hitting a Taylormade R7 Quad HT 10.5 degree stiff (haven't quite warmed up to buying a "dinner plate on a stick" R11s yet). Late last fall we did some very accurate measuring (abt 75-80F, no wind). Using 22 out of 32 drives after warmup, throwing out 5 high and 5 low, and I was surprised to find I was carrying only 235-240 (range 232-246)... topping out at mid 250's with my Sunday best. BUT I was surprised I was totaling closer to 270-275 with roll (more than I thought). And these weren't hard pan conditions either, pretty much "semi-soft average" conditions for us in SE Texas.
I've tested a few demo days with the R11s... and its coming in about 10 yds further, but with much wider L-R dispersion. I have a pretty shallow swing plane, and Bermuda rough in Texas is no place to be. I would rather be 15 yards shorter and hit 2 more fairways as I'm a decent iron player. I would probably get the L-R dialed in if I had an R11s and worked with it a bit.. but not worth $400 to me at this point. I'll wait and probably be able to pick one up used this winter for maybe half of new...
For reference... USGA hdcp index = 7-8 ish... just don't play much anymore. And by the way... my gaggle of guys are WAY past the macho thing... and we "play it forward". 5 sets of tees at our place (red-white-blue-gold-black) and we usually play blue/gold between 6650-6900. short end of that Numbers when cold/wet, long end when it's fast... I leave the Blacks (7250 stretched) to the kids and the big egos...

I've got a new GPS toy so might get a better idea of how far I actually do hit the ball. Mind you there haven't been any windless days lately. Maybe the average of a downwind one and an upwind one would give some idea?

Re: How long is your big stick?
Fascinated at how most are able to accurately measure their carry distance. Do you look for pitch marks up the fairway??
For what it's worth I did some gap testing about a month ago (was buying a new 3 wood) With the Pro using his Trackman thingy I got measured on how far I carry 4iron, 21 deg rescue, 18 deg rescue, various 3 woods (settled on the titleist 910) and driver
According to Trackman I carry my driver approx 235/240 and it rolls out to 265/275

Re: How long is your big stick?
If I hit a drive on a hole, say for instance par 5 477 yards, and I'm level with the 150 yard marker after my tee shot, that would mean I hit a drive around the 327 yard mark, give or take a few yards... If the driving range has markers and your consistently putting it 20 or 30 yards, carry past the 250 mark then you have an idea how far the ball is going. Yes it's not to the mm, but I get the feeling this post was a bit of fun!!
