Ireland Have A Very Long Year
This phrase get repeated 27 times during the match commentary of Ireland v All Blacks (I count it). That is not include build up and half time punditery.

Yes. If they play for a NH team they would be called "rusty"

Indeed. And Sin's figures are off, neither mccaw nor Reid have played that many this year (remembering that the SH season started in Feb). Mccaw's probably played around 10 matches since coming into SXV after his injury post RWC.

They may have been, but there was a big break after the world cup.
Week 14 in Super Rugby so far, so they haven't missed that much.

I was basing it on from the world cup (which is when Ireland's season started).

Ah. Most ABs had played over 20 matches in their 2011 season by the start of the RWC

And I'm sure the commentators were saying last season that NZ has a very long season.
This season, Ireland has a very long season so they are commenting on that.

By then McCaw would be into his lst 3 matches of a season that started 30 matches prior and Heaslip on maybe 10 matches?

But NZ won
My point is not criticise Ireland. I can feel sorry a bit for them to end like this when they are better team. My point is just about commentator keep repeat the same idea.

September, Rabo games. Heaslip will probably be on 4/5 by the time you visit (I can tell you the games he will play in- Rabo game prior to Munster, then 2 HCup games then Autumn Internationals). Definately undercooked when you visit!
McCaw:
10/11 Season = 17 games

Heaslip

You misunderestimate my point! I already said just up there ^^^^ is not criticise Ireland but just mention the commentator start to make the excuse a lot in the game that Ireland THEMSELF not make!!! The commentator put words to the mouth on behalf the team and I think is not constructive.
Kidney after the game say he not try to make the excuse. And BOD say the same thing very gracious after the game. Nobody say "we play too much rugby" except the commetator!

Uhuh.
It's not an excuse. But 51 weeks between the start of pre-season and the last game of the season is too long.

Hope Ireland have the kahunas to be the first nation to say thanks but no thanks to the Lions(for certain players at least).................although the IRB probably have a rule saying it's compulsory(like you MUST respect the Haka)......................our top players play way too much rugby and careers are being unneccessarily shortened.................no reason why a fit, top class rugby player shouldn't play till 35 -37 if looked after properly.
The Lions Tours were perfect in the amateur era, the schedule currently is overloaded and IMO the Lions should be brought to an end.................

Agreed. His posts are just pathetic digs at, usually, Ireland. There's a very egotistic reason behind them. Attention. The need to be noticed. I bet he feels really important behind his computer screen now.

McCaw missed a fair few games last year and in 8/9 due to injury so that's not an entirely valid comparison. Though I bet McCaw chalked up a lot more air miles along the way. Most of the Crusaders had over 100,000 miles travelled before the Super rugby playoffs started.

Exactly my point in a way. Take the choice away from them. Players are now professional, paid by their clubs/union and as such the International Team Coach(from the 4 nations) & the respective club coaches should be allowed to say Players X Y and Z are NOT going with the Lions(regardless of fitness). Obviously such decisions would hugely undermine the Lions but so be it. Personally, i think it's time to say goodbye to them................

No, they should have a choice. Many Irish players are privileged to play for the Lions, but there is no reason why a player can refuse to tour themselves. Nothing to do with clubs, union or International pressure.

Gael,
There is NO chance a player will make themselves unavailable. That's what unions are for surely, to manage their resources.
The Lions was a great idea in an amateur era, it's surely time to start the conversation about how long it can be sustained................with the brute physicality of Rugby nowadays, the season is way too long...............

Re: Ireland Have A Very Long Year
The reason why there is too much rugby is due to the number of competitions for the clubs.
Correct me if I am wrong, if we look at the Rabo and the premiership, it each contains 12 teams who play home and away?
So that is 22 round robin matches plus finals, which means it is 25 matches?
Then the Heineken is 6 rounds per pooel, plus kockout ronds totalling another 9 matches?
This does not include warm up matches pre season of 3 matches?
Add 12-14 tests and there are close to 50 matches to be played?
Test rugbybrings in by far the most money, so logic dictates for any of the Unions they can't reduce those.
Club rugby needs to be revised, simple as that.

Or everyone stop whinging Biltong! AUstralian players some play 3 games in 7 days. And they beat the 6N grandslam champions in the 3rd!
I think the "too much rugby" is a nonsense. IT should lead to greaterening the deep of the player pool to the country.

Re: Ireland Have A Very Long Year
john with all due respect I disagree, when the Lions squad is selected it takes 40 players out of the 4 avaiable home unions, rather than 120 players.
That means one third of those players play test rugby during that summer tour.
Logic tells me those 80 players left behind benefits each of those home unions as these players get much needed rest.
Apart from that, if you did remove the Lions tour which surely brings in riughly the same revenue as the usual tours, each of those unions would go tour anyway to make money, only with more players.
The answer lies in the clubs my friend.

The B+I Lions is a partnership of the Unions involved and are based in Dublin. Each Union (whether they supplied players or not), got £1m for the trip to SA last time. The IRFU won't be pulling the plug on that.

If the Lions was folded for the "too much rugby" argument then for the Unions to head off on tour would be bizzare, but i take your point about the Revenue aspect.......................and that's what it's all about i suppose!!

He averages 8.6 Super Rugby games a season. (I've excluded his first season and this one as its not over yet in the averaging). The most Super Rugby games he has played in any one season is 14.
On the travel aspect - I remember Dougie saying that, that was one of the reasons he moved away - he hated all the travelling (though in fairness, the Rabo League does entail a fair few nights away because of the distances involved and to have to fly a lot).

Re: Ireland Have A Very Long Year
This is why I was against letting the Italians into the Rabo to begin with. Four unnecessary additional fixtures annually for each original Rabo side. What were the union chiefs thinking when they voted in favour of it? Too much heart and not enough head imo, in other words no thought spared for the repercussions it would have on the players.
Three nations in one league is enough. And why the hell did we have to be the ones to babysit the Italians in the first place? We need to cut back on the number of games in every season, as a Welsh fan I'd also like to see the LV= scrapped.
