Djokovic bounces the ball too much. Discuss.

Well TITN. I'm currently in my airport hotel as we fly early to Nice tomorrow. I'm going with fellow Rafateers, Rafan and Denz, and we'll have a couple of days sight-seeing, but we have tickets from Wednesday right through to the final.
If we can manage sort the WiFi in Nice, we'll be posting our daily reports in our Pre Rafa Lites corner.

That's fantastic! I'm guessing you'll be having a go at the casino at some point?
Very expensive place mind, especially if you choose to go to the casino.

TITN, you must have a scientific calculator for a brain, don't know how you work all this out, but we're all damn glad you can.
Its nice to have it all in a spreadsheet kind of thing.

We'll be visiting the casino from a tourist point of view I guess. But we won't get good odds on a Rafa win, will we??

I wasn't implying you were a gambler, it's just that it's probably Monte Carlo's most famous building besides the royal palace. Plenty of celebs in there too; I met Shane Warne of all people there!Wooffie wrote:We'll be visiting the casino from a tourist point of view I guess. Thanks, hopefully I've got it all right. Troicki and Gasquet are the weird ones due to the fact they have to change the format in which they lose/gain points over the course of the season.

Virtual 5 stars! And a virtual applause, since we still don't have that emoticon...
So the points from the other tournament (whether it be Basel or MC) are assigned to Federer's ranking after he drops the first "0 pointer" - is that correct? If so, when would that be?

When the penalty drops, in effect at the start of the tournament he was penalised at. So in Federer's case, when Hamburg starts at the end of July he'll get 1 of either the Dubai final, Basel final or Monte Carlo points added onto his tally, and then another one of those when his Washington points penalty drops in August and then finally he'll add a last ATP500 to his tally in October when his Tokyo penalty drops.
Nadal's the only other guy in the top 20 with points penalties I think; he has 2 of them, so his Barcelona points, presuming he plays it this year, won't count untill August.

Well ... if he's fit, he's playing.
Blimey ... I thought a win there would add to keeping Nole at bay, but whether now or August, it will still be useful.

Re: ATP Points Thingy - Monte Carlo Masters
Excellent, analysis TITN it seems that Roger won't be able to do much damage and regain the #2 spot in Monte Carlo. I still don't have a full understanding of the ATP points system, the penalties and the requirements for number of events at each 500 or 250 that qualifies makes it really confusing.

Oh, really? You should see my personal notes.
I've also updated the tables, I got Rafael Nadal of all players wrong.
He may find his MC points replaced with 40 Davis Cup points, and not the usual 10 for failing at the first hurdle of a Masters, if he loses the first round. You'd hope he'd do a bit better than that, though...

Re: ATP Points Thingy - Monte Carlo Masters
That spreadsheet is a life-saver, don't mock it!
I think i'd probably have thrown the towel in if I had to apply a calculator to all of this as well....
EDIT: Further edit to the tables, Murray got a wildcard into the Masters so he doesn't gain 10 points for being allowed a bye through the first round, unlike 8th seed Gael Monfils. Sorry!

Now there's something I haven't heard before.
PS. When you edit your last comment on a thread and add some significant (or any other kind of) information, like you just did, that doesn't show on the browser page as new post added, and nobody knows there's something new to read...

Yeah, I only just discovered that rule an hour or two ago. I was wondering why Murray had no points for losing in his first round last year whilst Youzhny got 10 points, so I had a thorough hunt through the rulebook.
As for the new post, well it means people don't notice my mistake, doesn't it? 8)

Re: ATP Points Thingy - Monte Carlo Masters
Updated. As predicted, Wawrinka slid to 15th in the rankings this week, but one thing I didn't account for was Mardy Fish getting an extra 40 points from Houston.
Verdasco still only has to make the 3rd round to overtake him though, although his lead over Fish would be a HUGE GAP of 9 points...

I'm writing a guide to the ATP Singles Rankings for you all by the way, just so you know whats coming up. Ain't I nice?
Though I will have to ask the admin what the limit for article sizes are.... it's pretty damn big what I've got down so far, let alone when i'm finished.

What are you doing, rewriting the ATP Rule Book? That's an interesting read, by the way .
But you got it wrong, we don't want a guide - we want you to be there to answer any question we care to ask! (Much easier than finding the answers for ourselves! )

Oh no, you've said it now.
But i'd made a pretty table and everything...
I suppose I could just stick the link to the ATP Rankings rules on the OP in the future. It's got the same table as I was going to put up for points distribution (albeit a less pretty one than mine) and really it's not all that hard to understand. If I can understand it, so can everyone else.
Speaking of understanding rankings, I have actually slightly misinformed you all over Viktor Troickis future situation, sorry. I've altered it now. I've also added a further reason as to why Gael Monfils will be dropping San Jose points here, and I've added the note about Andy Murray not getting any points if he loses and why that is. If you need anything explaining further, then just ask.
I'll update the tables later on today. No great changes for now, I don't think.

Didn't expect Melzer to beat Almagro so easily...
But I did expect Gil to win (I am very proud of that pick ).

Updated, Federer gains nor loses nothing here and Melzer continues to play catch up, now being less than 1000 points off Berdych. Ferrer successfully defends his semi-final; well done to him.

Updated. Ferrer will be less than 200 points off Soderling if he wins tomorrow, and will have the Number 4 spot well within his sights. Murray's made a gap between him and Soderling that can't be closed over one rounds difference, which will please him no doubt, and Nadal has managed to reclaim the vast majority of his points, which will likely annoy anyone who supports Djokovic.

Djokovic supporters are not like that! We are happy to see his main rivals doing well... as long as Novak's doing better (which he has been so far this season).

Updated for should hopefully be the last time; I'll have more big check through everyones situation regarding gaining/dropping different tournaments and then that should be that. Big win for Nadal but there's a few more tournaments to go yet...

Re: ATP Points Thingy - Monte Carlo Masters
Egads, 3 masters titles worth of points between Nadal and Federer and four's worth to Djokovic.
Can he be overtaken before Wimbledon? I don't think so, I cant see anyone taking over the No1 spot until at least the WTF's or maybe the USO. I know that there are quite a few "other than clay" masters around, but Nadal is not defending that many points in those, its just the slams he needs to perform in, and we know what kind of animal he is in those.
He'd have to have a pretty bad showing at those if anyone is going to compete for that crown.
But I do have reservations about him lifting the FO trophy, don't know if he will re-produce the same intensity for the whole year as in 2010 and the FO for him must seem like an eventuality that is written in stone.

Updated for the final time. Forgot Youzhny was in the tournament, so for losing i the first round he obviously got 10 points instead of 0, and I gave Mardy Fish 5 extra points for some bizarre reason. The rest is OK, which surprises me as much as it'll surprise you.
Dolgo now Top 20 and Raonic is inside the Top 30, debuting at #28!
