Contesting a Win Empty Contesting a Win

“I tried hard but I couldn’t beat the guy.”

These are, as we know, the purported words of Timothy Bradley before the decision was announced in the Pacquaio fight. It will always be a matter of contention whether he said this or not; however, what I’d like to concentrate on is the phrase itself.

Being awarded a title and winning a title can, from time to time, be two separate things. A fighter can get a decision but know in his heart of hearts that he didn’t deserve it. The question I have relates to this: has a fighter ever been given the nod, but turned it down because they felt the verdict was wrong?

You often here of fighters contesting losses, but has a fighter ever contested a win?

Not to my knowledge but it is not impossible, would guess th nearest I have seen would have been Richie Woodhall against Glen Catley were Richie pretty much admitted he had been extremely fortunate to hold onto his title.

Never heard of a fighter contesting a win to be fair. Ive only ever seen Robbie Fowler contest a penalty HE was awarded for Liverpool (against Arsenal).

I think the "I tried hard but could not beat the guy" is never in a million years what Bradley said. He just does not have that attitude.

Plus Bradley won fair and square with a fractured ankle!

I doubt Bradley said it as well. I'm afraid I don't know much about football, mobilemaster8. When you said Robbie Fowler, I thought you were referring to that bloke off Eastenders. Very Happy

Not Robbie Fowler of EastEnders...that would be Robbie Jackson!!!

I know 606 legend Gary Lockett once stated after a comeback win he didn't deserve to win if he was going fight like that and almost retired in disgust at himself. That's probably the closest I've seen...

...Oh, let's not forget the South Korean who was given the Gold Medal over Roy Jones Jnr at the Olympics. He knew he'd lost and raised Jones' hand....course he still kept the medal the sneaky little so and so

That's a relief, Dave - it's nice to know at least one other person on here knows their 'stenders! Robbie Fowler, I ask...

Anyway, to the question, as others have said I've never really seen or heard of anyone wanting a win scrubbed from their record, no matter how suspicious it was, but rather just the beneficiary of the decision saying in a roundabout way that they were lucky. Joe Louis whispering "I'm sorry" to Jersey Joe after their first bout, in which he was given a very unpopular decision, being a decent example.

Yes, my wife spends all day at home with our baby daughter whilst I go out to work so it's only fair that I have to sit and watch all the stuff previously recorded on the digibox that she hasn't had time to get round to watching....cos she's been busy watching "Come Dine With Me" "Desperate Housewives" "Murder She Stuck her f*****g nose into" and other assorted drivel.
