Celtic Manor - Roman Road Couse
I am playing this course on Thursday in my Wholesalers golf day - around about 60 golfers will be there with top 4 qualifying for a wee trip to Spain in September so worth doing well; same venue as last year but we played the Montgomerie course last year and someone on here kindly gave me a few pointers. Any insider info from you lot who have played it before and remember any pointers?
It is stableford off 7/8 h/c so I will get 17 of my 19 handicap
Cheers

Surely a change of underwear and shorts to be kept in the bag would be a must too.

Re: Celtic Manor - Roman Road Couse
Joking aside, given the rain we've had it is going to be rather...eh...dare I say...quagmireish!! The fairways and greens should be fine but off piste there will be some very boggy areas
I played it a few times and from what I remember for the most part missing left was a lot more penal that missing right. Unless you rip it a county mile the 3rd is a 3 shotter. When going down that hill on 3 take a peek (left) at where the pin is on 4 (quite a tier on that green and you want to be on the right tier). There are quite a few other opportunities to look at flags that you'll play to later.

Tarka still bogged down from yesterday I presume.
We are playing the Wesh national next weekend just down the road above Cardiff great track with one of the worst finishing holes ever.

I played the course mid-Aug a few years ago, and it was indeed chucking down like the end of the world. Casual water in places I didn't know water could be so casual - some bunkers basically became water hazards.
Having said that, I really enjoyed playing the course - with several years hindsight anyway. My partners had had enough by about hole 15 I think so we packed it in then - but the pro shop were kind enough to give us a partial refund on the buggy hire [not that buggies are necessary for that course, unlike the Monty - my partner was keen to use though].

Re: Celtic Manor - Roman Road Couse
Disappointing performance from tarka, 26 pts off 3/4 h/c.
Started poorly came on to a game and then finished poorly.
I thought the course was superb and in remarkable condition after the rain. 40 players,
1st - 34 pts
2nd - 29pt (one of my playing partners with h/c 18 same as me)
3rd - 28pts
so everyone found it tough.
My driving was great and long irons not too bad but round the grean I got all I deserved and duffed a few which made all the difference at the end.
I thought the manor lodge hotel was excellent and I can firmly recommend this venue to anyone who is interested

Next year, try St Pierre - it's a much nicer course, and plenty of history too.
