If Nadal wins 1 more FO he would end up higher than Sampras in GOAT debate

With 11 GS titles and having a complete set, R Nadal would end higher in the GOAT debate ahead of Sampras if he atleast win 1 more slam specifically FO.

Nadal - Pete in view tied at 8-8, but right now I would give the edge to Sampras since he has 7 wins in his signature slams and hence if Rafa wins 1 more FO he would end up higher than Pete

Pete has loads more weeks and years at #1 in his favour.

Rafa has all 4 slams in his favour, vs only 3 for Pete.

So I think it's fair to judge it on the overall slam total. If Rafa retires on 13, I would tend to put Pete ahead. If Rafa retires on 14, I would tend to put Rafa ahead with Sampras never in a Fo final.

One more FO is not going to make a huge difference.

On a technical level I'm finding it difficult to dispute the OP's contention.

I think the issue we may have is that we are far more familiar with Pete being successful (grass and all that). It would be interesting to get European perspective. The French may not even remember who Pete was!

Can't really say that for sure - it is entirely possible that Rosol will play like that again.

What can be said with 100% certainty is that Rosol will never be able spring that kind of surprise on anyone again. Other players will make it their business to be well prepared to face him if they see his name in the draw.
