Gemili wants to follow in MLF/HAA and Christian Malcolms footsteps...
Now Gemili the fastest man at the Championships and where his heat will start in Barcelona's 1992 Olympic Stadium around lunchtime tomorrow, is being tipped to become the fourth Briton to life the 100m gold medal following the previous successes of Christian Malcolm, Mark Lewis-Francis and Harry Aikines-Aryeetey.
"Obviously those three others are amazing in what they've done," said Gemili, Europe second and his country's fastest performer this year. "They've come to the Junior Champs and done so well. I look up to them. Hopefully I will follow in their footsteps."
http://www.iaaf.org/Mini/WJC12/News/NewsDetail.aspx?id=65651
I couldn't help but chuckle at this, I just hope he doesn't follow too closely or rather he takes another angle where they started to dip.

Point well made Ryan.
Gemili needs to look beyond the three names he's mentioned [ though a big fan of Christian Malcolm's - top man! ].
He should look to becoming the top European Sprinter. Think if things falls right, he could go sub10 this season

Gemili qualifies out of Heat in the equal quickest time;
10.37 into a -2.5 headwind. That is very good indeed. Chijindi Ujah goes though 2nd in his heat, in 10.48s [ -1.6s headwind ].
http://www.iaaf.org/mini/wjc12/Results/ResultsByDate.aspx?racedate=07-10-2012/sex=M/discCode=100/combCode=hash/roundCode=h/results.html#detM_100_hash_h
If the conditions allow, he could go very close to 10sec!

Judd's a phenomenal talent. 2nd fastest ever Brit in the U20 bracket - except she's 17! [ PB 2:01.09 - just a comletely daft time for a 17 year old! And I mean that in a good sense! ]

Good question Ifc91.
Just had a check on Powerof10 - most of the qualifiers at the World's Juniors, qualified with a time faster than any Brit has run this year. That's not to say that we shouldn't have sent anyone [ though I suspect that our Junior prospects would've had have run a big PB to avoid exiting in the heats ].

World Junior 100m semi's tomorrow 6:30pm our time, and the final is 8:45pm our time.
Women's 100m semi's kick off 6:00pm - and final 8:00pm. [ Brits Sophie Papps and Rachel Johncock through in 11.59 and 11.75 respectively ]

Judd into the final by winning her semi from the front again, Emily Dudgeon also wins her semi from the front. Remarkably similar times too, Judd 2:02.30 and Dudgeon 2:02.32.
Both girls in with a decent chance of medals. Judd still probably the favourite for the title.

Gemili looking good into the final with 10.18, Also Ujah with a PB of 10.40 makes it to the final as a fastest loser. (As did Sophie Papps in the women's event.)
Good stuff from our young sprinters.

Great stuff regarding sprints!
Gemili ran 10.18 with a -0.5 headwind. With a favourable wind, he could go sub10 in the final. The problem is the general trend for the direction of the wind is against, rather than for in Barca [ looking at many of todays and yesterdays sprints results ].
We got to say, though, that the main thing is the title - but a sub10 run to go with it would be grand!!!
Thinking too far ahead methinks and don't want to jinx the fella
Come on Gemili!

The final heat there was a +1.2 tailwind, so hopefully there's a chance that it might be helpful.
That said, the winds don't seem to be as strong as they were yesterday.
Not sure about sub 10. Will be very happy if he can simply come away with gold, there are a few other guys who will challenge him in the final.

Indeed. In what were fairly still conditions, 10.05 is remarkable. In my view, barring injury or illness, he will go sub10 this year.
He's a monster. Incredibly powerful. But still Raw. And eager for opportunity, with clearly so much more to come

Just watched Gemili's 10.05 several times. Wow!
The really great thing this is, is that he's really enjoying his athletics - seeming like he can't believe it; that he's running these times - times that he could have only dreamt of perhaps a few years ago.
He's now in with the big boys

Gemili's progress this year (from Chelsea junior cadet to athletics runner) has been mind blowing. The question is should one not over train him - let him have fun running, keep him fresh - normal maturation should see him go sub 10 seconds.
Maybe too much expectation has been placed on Jodie Williams - she doesn't seem so fresh anymore - and she has been affected by a string of injuries.

He's got another 3-4 years before he should reach his physical potential (lol). Just hope he's trained right technically and doesn't over do the weights gym.

To be running that time at aged 18 is quite remarkable!
He is now the best sprinter in the country.
He should make the 100m final at the olympics as long as he is does not become overwhelmn by the occasion. I remember Usain Bolt at the 2004 Athens games failing to progress pass the 1st round in the 200m as a 17 year old despite comming into the championship with a world lead of 19.93.
Lets hope the same doesnt happen to Gemili, I must confess the first i heard of him was at the UK Olympics trials.

I think making the Olympic final will be a massive ask for him, if you look at who will likely be there, I think making the semis wiould be an amazing achievement for him.
Nice to have a sprinter to get excited about who has the potential in the future to break the UK record.

Assuming reasonable conditions in London, I'd expect finalists to have to go sub 10 seconds. He's not far off it though and just possibly he could do it. It would wrong to expect it though.
It will be very interesting to see how much athletes benefit from a 'home' games. Newspapers are talking about 20% more medals based on performances in other 'home' games. You could well imagine that the affects would be noticeable at other levels so who knows what he'll be capable of with most of the stadium cheering him on.

I guess Im assuming that Bolt, Blake, Powell, Gay, and probably Gatlin will all make the final as they have all ran either 9.8 or 9.7 this year. That really only leaves 3 spots and an awful lot of sprinting talent, Bledman has ran 9.86 this year as well, there are a lot of scarily quick guys out there.
That said he looks like a kid who can perform on the big stage as the UK trials and these champs show so who knows.

Re: Gemili wants to follow in MLF/HAA and Christian Malcolms footsteps...
It's possibly more a question of how Gemili handles the pressure. He's still young and inexperienced. Though he has handled himself, to date, really, really, well
Getting into the final is going to be really hard. There are people running the 100m out there seemingly for breakfast! Agree with Diggers that there are 5 to make the final we might broadly accept as given [ Bolt, Blake, Powell, Gay, and Gatlin ] - Keston Bledman has run really well [ with two timings inside 9.90 and one at 9.93 ], so he'd have to be another placing perhaps. Leaving two.
Who else?!
I think Lemaitre will make the Final.
So that one leaves one perhaps?!
Gemili does have an outside shot. If he treats the semi as if a final. Athletes will possibly have to go sub10 in the semi to make the final [ weather permitting - which means we're trouble if we're looking out for fast times this year! ].
We can see Gemili's enthusiasm and energy. It is infectious. We could see the way he crossed the line in the World Junior 100m final, and looked at the clock and was overjoyed at what he saw; 10.05 [ confirming to him that everything he'd been doing had been down to his ability - no fluke occurences etc ]. My own enthusiams about him are born from his attitude and energy.
I don't think expectations are high here for Gemili [ at least, with regards to the immediate future ]. Just hopes! By visiting these boards and commenting, we by our nature are speculators - looking ahead at the possiblities, and enjoying the debate and dicussion [ sometimes! ].
Wish the young fella all the best!

Re: Gemili wants to follow in MLF/HAA and Christian Malcolms footsteps...
This is gearing up to be one of the most anticpated 100m finals in history. If conditions are right I could see all the finalist dipping below 10 seconds for the first time ever.
A time of 9.6ish will win it, conditions permitting. Looking at the field as it stands there are only 2 guys capable of running that time in 3 weeks. Blake and Bolt. The olympics comes 3 months too early for Gay to hit that top form and Powell has regressed.

Id love it to be that fast but Im thinking more like low 9.8's high 9.7's will win it. Evening session in August in London, probably unlikely to be that warm really and thats not even before we think about rain.
But really we are going into the unknown a bit, the tracks meant to be quick so that could make a difference. The talent is there for a super quick race. I cant wait though my tickets are for the mens 200 final which again should be a corker.

Fantastic achievement, congrats to Gemili
However he went to the trials with easily the fastest time and ended up losing to a guy who doesn't even have the OG qualifying time.
Multiply the tension of the trials by the olympic factor and I think he will do very well to make the semi's
Good luck to him though.

The talk in France is that Lemaitre may not do the 100m, instead concentrating on the 200 (and the relay) where he has a more realistic shot at a medal, particularly after his 19.91 yesterday.
Gemili looks a bit bulky to me still, although not as much as MLF, the UK regularly seem to produce these great junior sprinters but rarely transferring to senior results in recent times. One has to wonder why?

Realy? I thought he looked very slight for a sprinter. Yes that has been a big problem, hope gemilli is the one to break the trend! The fact that he only just switched to athletics seems to be working in his favour, he seems to be having a great time and enjoying every race he has. Good luck to the man at the olympics!

He's only just begun to train as a sprinter rather than a football player so I imagine he has in fact done very little gym work

mikeselig
may I refer you to the original MLF thread?

"Too much time in the gym and not enough on the track"
He's only just begun to train as a sprinter rather than a football player so I imagine he has in fact done very little gym work

BBC article and interveiw with Gemili. Gemili aiming at the 10 second barrier. Also, have to laugh when he talks about competing against the world's best and hoping that he doesn't get beaten to badly

London 2012: Adam Gemili aims to break 10-second barrier
Adam Gemili hopes to break the 10-second barrier soon as the teenage sprinter prepares to make his Olympic debut in London.
The 18-year-old won 100m gold at the World Junior Championships earlier this month with a time of 10.05 seconds. "It is every sprinter's goal to get under 10," he told BBC Radio 5 live. "I am close to it so hopefully I can get it soon. "It is only a bit to shave off but it takes a lot to shave that off."
Gemili has only been training as an athlete full-time for a few months, having spent the last couple of years with Dagenham & Redbridge as he tried to forge a career as a professional footballer. However, he consistently impressed on the track as an amateur and decided to focus solely on athletics in January.
"I was playing football initially and I did athletics to help my fitness but never thought I would get anywhere," he added.
"I have only really been sprinting properly since January. That is when I trained full-time and made some improvements and started to get some good times. "Now I have done a lot this year, I am enjoying how it is going so far. I am really pleased I made the move and gave athletics a go."
Gemili has earned plenty of praise in his fledgling career, with American sprinter Tyson Gay, the second fastest man in history, saying he has the potential become an "all-time great". Later this month, Gemili could be competing against world record holder Usain Bolt and Yohan Blake at the Olympics, but the teenager is keeping his expectations in check.
"I am looking forward to competing against the world's best," he said.
"I want to see how I do and try not to get beaten too badly. I want to go there and get a good experience."

Realistic. Just hope he's getting the right training with the right mentor and people around him. If he wants to be big on the world stage, he's got some serious work to do, and it this next 3 years that will be the base for him.

It's also a realistic target for Gemili to aim to become European No.1. A status that's become a lot more meaningful since Lemaitre came onto the scene.
